Chip: Can every Gophers sport survive the budget cutting ahead?

The Gophers‘ volleyball team reached the Final Four again last year. Their coach, Hugh McCutcheon, has coached teams to an Olympic gold medal and an Olympic silver medal. He is quite possibly the best volleyball coach on Planet Earth. He recently signed the #1-ranked recruiting class in the...

Chip: Don't want Gophers to cut sports? Then buckle up for big changes

I realize this post isn’t about Gophers football, but someone asked in this thread about tennis players, so... Three Minnesota-born tennis players who have had professional success: David Wheaton, won MSHSL boys tennis championship as a frosh, still writes a few columns per year for the...

Ranking the Top 25 coaches in college football - 247 - #16 PJ Fleck

There are no criteria listed for their rankings, but at least it's something to read about college football. Fleck's blurb contains the following: Barton's take: "There are plenty of Fleck haters out there. They call it a gimmick. They don’t buy into the slogans. The enthusiasm has to be fake...

Who is on your Golden Gopher Defensive Back Mount Rushmore?

This made me laugh, although your definition of “DB” might be a bit different than the original intent.

    Stewart Mandel’s post-spring top 25 for 2020 (Gophers #17)

Stewart Mandel of theathletic.com posted his post-spring top 25 list of college football teams, though the vast majority of teams didn’t complete spring ball. He has the Gophers at #17: 17. Minnesota (11-2) Minnesota got a few spring practices in. New offensive coordinator Mike Sanford Jr...

2021 NFL Mock Draft: Way-too-early first round predictions #14. Rashod Bateman)

That would be interesting, one Fleck-coached WR moving out (if I’m reading that correctly), making way for another Fleck-coached WR to move in.

2021 Mock Draft from theathletic.com (Bateman #22 to GB)

Theathletic.com put out its 2021 mock draft, and has another Gophers player going to Green Bay. (I included the mock first pick of the Vikings, too, as they were one slot after GB, meaning... they had a slightly better season???) 22. Green Bay Packers — *Rashod Bateman, WR, Minnesota...

Minnesota Gophers - 2020 NFL Draft

This doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the Gophers, but I think it’s interesting that tiny, DIII school St. John’s, in Collegeville, MN, had more players drafted into the NFL than Rutgers, Northwestern, and Illinois combined. Ben Bartch was drafted by Jacksonville in the fourth round.

Johnson joins Winfield in Tampa Bay

Yeah, that’s a nice group to learn from, with very little pressure on him to be “the man” during his rookie season.

Ex-Gopher Tyler Johnson 'shocked' by reports of character concerns

And now he’ll catch passes from a six-time Super Bowl winner. Not a bad gig.

What is your, "I remember exactly where I was" Gopher Football Moment?

I’ll go a little more recent, back to last fall vs Penn State (yeah, I know, it’s not too long ago, but I’m 58, and my memory isn’t what it used to be, so I’ll take just about anything I can get). My wife and I were on a trip to Florida, and gave our tickets to our daughter and son-in-law. We...

Charley Walters weighs in on Morgan, Johnson, Winfield, and Ben Bartch (St. John’s)

Yeah, I considered that. In the end, I figured Mel Kiper gets far more attention than the Big Shooter, and also far more than is warranted, especially the past few weeks, when the NFL draft buildup is just about all that’s shown on ESPN. On the other hand, I think I’ve also put too much...

Charley Walters weighs in on Morgan, Johnson, Winfield, and Ben Bartch (St. John’s)

From Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press: It wouldn’t occur for at least a couple of years, but Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan, who’ll be a junior next season, has the potential to be a starting quarterback in the National Football League. That’s the opinion of ESPN’s Mel Kiper, the...

More love for Winfield from a draftnik

From Bruce Feldman of theathletic.com • Best value pick among the defensive backs (at least according to how these mock drafts have things): Minnesota’s Antoine Winfield Jr. He doesn’t have great length with him only about 5-9, but he’s got excellent speed. He ran 4.45 in the 40 in Indy. He’s...

    Book Recommendations

I'm usually into non-fiction, but my all-time fave is "The Count of Monte Cristo." It's pretty long (1,000 pages or so), but a real page-turner.

    Dpodoll’s whereabouts?

I haven’t read any posts by Dpodoll in a while. Does anyone have any insight? Am I just not noticing correctly? Like his posts or not, agree with them or not, he’s obviously a huge Gophers fan, and cares deeply about the programs in the athletics department at the U. Please don’t turn this...

Eleven Warriors on Gophers: I see 8-4 as the floor and 10-2 as the ceiling.

That reminds me of a quote that, if memory serves, was attributed to Hayden Fry, when he was head coach at Iowa: “In order to win games this year, we’re going to have to outscore the other team.” Yeah, thanks for the insight, Coach Fry.
