All Things Immaculate Grid-related (MLB, NBA, NFL)

For this team to lose 2 games during the course any standard regular 82 game NBA season it would take severe foul trouble by the starters along with a really crappy bench. That's even with Luka going half speed on D.

Or load management by multiple starters.

Maybe it assumes people like you and I are the bench for these teams.

I have 6 fouls to give. I also made 3 of 10 FTs at the gym a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure I could be that good (30%) in game action though.

I think it would take some hard work just to be able to hit the rim 90-95% of the time in order to give The Stilt and Big Fundamental a chance at the Offensive Rebound.

Been a minute on a Twins Grid Alert.

Orlando Cabrera was a New Player find by accident while looking up Orlando Hudson recently. OC had a brief Minnesota tenure in 2009.

Rich Rollins came to light as one of the 1st Twins All Stars.

I was excited to put Cotton Nash onto the grid for the first time today, he didn’t do much in baseball but he was a great basketball player for U of Kentucky, at one time he was their all-time leading scorer. Surprisingly, Matt Lawton was a newcomer for me today, I figured he would have been used in the early days.

My New Player today is Jim Delsing. If you turn on ESPN this month and just wait a few minutes it's pretty much a guarantee his grandson will pop up for a quick hit.

That would be Taylor Twellman, a Soccer Talking Head, making 100s of appearances with the big world tournament going on.

I was able to complete today’s grid with all Twins alums, in my ongoing quest to have my Top 20 all be former Twins, which is still an uphill climb-Kaat joined earlier this week, so I have 12 of the 20 squares represented by alums.

Twins Alert on the Grid. Only New Player is Minnesota Native and former Gopher WS Champion, Jerry Kindall.

He went on to Coach the Arizona Wildcats to 3 Titles.

Gary Carter has now cracked the 100 Club.

Back to my post about nicknames, there's an MLB player listed on the Grid as: "The Only Nolan".

Nolan was expelled by Indianapolis on August 14 when he told the team he was going to a funeral but instead went drinking.

My kind of player.

New Player today is now a favorite of mine, Sugar Cain. He hung around the Show for 7 seasons, despite never having a sub 4.00 ERA.

My overall Rarity took a hit at 52 despite the help from Sugar.

Today is the day for New Player Tack Wilson. The name alone (not to be confused with Hack Wilson) has been on my radar I swear for YEARS but each opportunity I kept forgetting to use him.

12 MLB games total with a 4 year gap. Tack made his MLB debut in 1983 as a Twin and then appeared later with the Halos in 1987. 8 of his appearances were as a Pinch Runner.

As a helpful hint for future reference, his cup of coffee with the Angels he hit .500. Career Batting Average is .333.

Also a New Player is Brett Sullivan, one of the Rockies Catchers who did not destroy Target Field with bombs this past weekend.

Kong is now closing in on the Century Club at 94.

Twins on the Grid today, with several alums fitting into other categories. My favorite from today is Crider, who hit .444 in his only season with the Twins, on the back of his success against Jim Bouton during his Ball Four season. If Crider would have e been half as successful as a pitcher, he might have stuck longer. I also can put the Joey Lawrence era to bed now.

Aaargh, as soon as I saw Tack Wilson, I was kicking myself-as with you, he’s existed in my back pocket for months (years?). So many notable former Twins/Angels, it felt as if I had exhausted the category, but ol’ Tack remains unused.

At least a couple dozen of times over the years Post Grid I would go through the "show results" feature, see Tack Wilson listed and then 🤦‍♂️.

In doing a deep dive into Tack's organized pro-baseball saga it's pretty fascinating. 15 Minor League seasons starting at age 20 in 1976 until 1990. He had 9 AAA seasons with stops at:

Albuquerque (Dodgers)
Toledo (Twins)
Phoenix (Giants)
Edmonton (Angels)
Oklahoma City (Rangers)
Denver (Brewers)

At age 34 he ended playing AA with Huntsville (Athletics). A living Ron Shelton/Bull Durham character.

Post-playing career he became a Hitting Coach in Taiwan.

Not seeing double, Tony Gwynn X2.

Lucked into Jr as a New Player.

I was plugging in Sr for the 2000 Hit/Padre category and auto fill presented dual options. Looking into V2.0 I noticed he was a Brewer in addition to playing for his hometown team.

I wasn’t aware that Tony Gwynn Jr. made the majors-I knew of Chris Gwynn, not Junior.

Another Twin breaks through today, with Tori’s addition to the big board. 13 down, 7 to go:

Tony Gwynn Jr does radio for the Padres games, and I check it out occasionally on SIRIUS XM.

Sounds like a vocal twin to his Dad.

Almost forgot this, one of your IG heroes was featured on the Two Strike Noise podcast this week:

A real interesting listen, especially his days as an undertaker.

Fun fact Waite Hoyt is an alum of Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, NY. He's nowhere near the Mt Rushmore of famous alumni though which include:

Al Davis
Clive Davis (RIP)
Neil Diamond
Barbara Streisand

Don Most (aka Ralph Mouth) is also on the roster.

How does Joe Niekro not appear on your list?

He is also referenced in the Two Strike Noise podcast that you posted.
He’s (gotta be) on the doorstep, along with Viola, LaTroy, Bruno, and Morneau.

Only New Player added is Phil Hughes.

He was brought to mind as he was mentioned on yesterday's radio post-game. Hughes was one of the Pitchers of Record (for Minnesota) the last time the Twins won a series at Yankee Stadium until this weekend.

Couldn't use him today, but was flipping around last night and noticed WCCO doing a story that featured Atwater's Mike Kingery, who played for 6 teams.

The field in Atwater is named for him and they are currently renovating it. Once it's complete, the seating behind home plate will be the familiar blue seats from the Metrodome. The town pulled a bunch out before demolition.

I was able to hit some deep cuts today to sweep the unique players for the Twins (and across the 10 win category, plus the Aussie, Shipley):
IMG_1123.jpeg
Kinnunen actually holds a very obscure MLB record-most lifetime appearances without a decision-48 games without a win, loss, or a save.

Powell was a 1st round pick, #7 overall, from Arizona State in ‘69. Alas, he didn’t pan out.

Diamond was the ace of a very bad 2012 squad, the only pitcher with double digit wins, who doubled the total of the next closest on the team (12 wins to 6 wins for Sam Deduno and Jeff Gray).

And I can’t find who posted it recently, but a tip of the cap for Carlos Carrasco, who I was made aware was being recalled for the 6th time this season by the Braves, which had me take a peek at his BR page, and put him to use today. (Btw, the three Carrasco’s that have pitched in MLB are a real bounty on the Grid).

Northfield HS Alum (born in Winona) Zach Thornton is my New Player #2100 today. Thornton has made 2 starts for the Mets this season.

Recent Twins addition Woo-Suk Go also makes his debut.

Current Saints skipper still MIA on Baseball Reference for some reason.

Twins on the Grid again, and I was able to scrape some unique players with Wolfe and Gant, plus Jarvis, who pitched very briefly and poorly for the Twins some years back.

My only Twins New Player is Nimrod, MN native Dick Stigman.

Lucked into George Soriano, by flipping channels and landing on MLB Network highlights. He picked up the W on Saturday.
