Early landing spots emerging for former Villanova guard

“He’s in the portal from Villanova after beginning his career at Maryland. And now, he’s looking for a third home in three seasons,” Heyen wrote.
“There’s at least some reason to wonder about landing spots at the likes of Illinois, Kansas, Houston and Georgia.
All four of those programs offered Palmer a scholarship when he was a high school recruit.”

Villanova Coach Kevin Dillard described Palmer in the following way this season: "Malachi is a tough, physical guard that plays on both sides of the ball. He is an elite on ball defender and a natural scorer at the offensive end. His athleticism and size make him a perfect fit for the Big East. Malachi is a gym rat who keeps getting better, a tough shot-maker who knows how to put the ball in the basket. We're excited to welcome Malachi to Villanova."

More physical than Evans, more proven point production than Grady and Groves at the college level. Like I said in the Kai threads...I expected a guard addition...just probably not one with this combination of potential and experience. Great add to the roster. But, also a work in progress...very inconsistent.Screenshot 2026-05-04 at 5.51.12 AM.png

Honestly this is a fair bit better than I expected at this point. Pedigree with being a top 150 recruit, played at Maryland and Villanova, and a guard with some size/maybe more of a wing. Saw some minutes in the Big East tournament and NCAA tournament.

Nice to have another upperclassman. I thought we would maybe be looking at a Charlie Daniel’s/Danny Ogele level final addition to the roster so this is encouraging.

He was the 7th man for a Big East tournament team, and was elevated to the starting lineup when Matthew Hodge tore his ACL in early March.
The likely candidate to replace Hodge is sophomore Malachi Palmer, who played a career-high 29 minutes against St. John’s.
“Obviously not having Matty stinks, but Malachi has played really well,” Willard said. “It does hurt us, but it’s not catastrophic.”
The Wildcats have been using Palmer off the bench, along with Devin Askew who is a leading candidate for the Sixth Man of the Year award in the Big East

Similar profile to Celiscar, who chose Baylor, but has played at a higher level. Many here have asked for a more physically imposing team, and I think the additions of Palmer, Groves, and Kordel provide that without sacrificing the overall shooting that Niko clearly values.

I think Daniel’s and Ogele types are part of our local dust bin of history. The current administration isn’t going to waste time, energy, or money on players like that. Local walk ons that cost almost nothing are probably more valuable to the program.

I'm not saying he is steph curry, but I'd hazard a guess that playing 38 minutes a game, without a true PG, and needing to be more of volume shooter than was expected hurt that number. If we stay healthier next year and have multiple options I think its near a lock to see that number go up.

He'd have to win a lawsuit against the NCAA or they have to give him the 5th year. However, at this point, if I am him- I am going to the highest bidder. This may be his best shot to secure his long term future and he could bring in a couple million- which we cannot match.
