CBS: Big Ten bold predictions for 2026 (Minnesota: Gophers pull off a big upset)

This would be nice.

One reason why I think Minnesota football is perceived to be weaker than its results have been over the past 10-15 years is a lack of monumental upsets and high points. Consistent competence and a high floor aren't recognized as much as volatility with high peaks.

Interesting take. I think you have a point.

Over the last 2 seasons:

Penn State: 20-9

Michigan: 17-9

Washington: 17-9

Minnesota: 16-10

I know I'm echoing what others have already pointed out, but should a win against one of these opponents really be considered a big upset?

Penn State and Michigan will both have new head coaches this coming season after dismissing the previous head guys. The Huskies coach will be starting his second year at Washington.

Don't get me wrong — the Gophers will be underdogs in all three of those games, and rightly so. But are those teams really that clearly superior to us? We aren't talking about Ohio State and Oregon.

There is an X factor in play regarding the game at Washington. See, I am attending that game in person and I have NEVER seen a Gopher Football win on the road. And it isn't like I have only gone to one Gopher football game on the road. I am 0-7.

Odds weren’t great at -155, but took that on the Gophers over 5.5 wins for sure! Still surprised it’s not 6.5 but surely to induce betting. Now the +3500 to make the CFP would be fun…

PJ’s philosophy on O dooms is to almost no chance of having many/any true upsets. The concept of having 15 play drives to play keep away against more talented opponents is nonsense it just won’t happen. Even with a superstar like Mo against the better teams it was a struggle. Our record setting lack of big plays and big play ability within this offense year after year combined with said philosophy gives us almost no chance. Cherry on top of that is if things start to go bad PJ really turtles up and tries to get out of town losing by just 25 and not 40. It just is what it is. We’ve deserved being ranked once and going to one good bowl game in a decade. We are the definition of mediocrity. We can just keep hoping he changes his best.

I haven't looked this up, I'm sure it's on GPT/Claude, but I wonder if recent upsets are leaning more towards shootouts than "keep away" PJ style ball.

I feel like if we won at Washington or Penn St (Especially Penn St this year) it really wouldn't even be that big of an upset. Even Michigan at home doesn't seem like a big one either, but maybe that is me overrating us as a program.
It would be fun to get the Jug in front of the home crowd.
