Winters Grady Commits to the Gophers!

Grady has great size & can shoot the lights out. Was considered the best pure shooter on Michigan last sesson. The foot should be fine. I like bringing in high upside guys with multiple years to play.
He thought the foot should/was fine for the past 5 years... Not...1. Not 2.... Not 3.... Not 4.... But 5 years .. in a row

He was healthy enough to tear it up his Sr year in HS, tear up the summer league after that, become the 81st ranked player in the nation & get recruited by the eventual National Champion.

He presumably had top-notch medical care at Michigan, a year to recover, the Gophers hsd time to look into it & he didn't break the bank.

High upside. I like it.

Not denying the upside... But he admitted that it hasn't been right since his fresh year in high school... I get our docs probably gave it the go ahead.. that doesn't elevate the concerns

Health is only one part the equation...the guys who were here, maybe they didn't really wanna be here or we didn't feel they were all in OR Niko said, I really don't like the vibe of this guy, I can't spend another year dealing his "shit". Or the trainers said he's good to go and the player said...it still hurts, I can't go yet. So many possible scenarios regarding who broke up with who. Coach, I gotta get this much money and Niko said good luck.
I was going to fire somebody at the end of the day once...they came into my office and told me how great I was but their co-worker was impossible for them to deal with so they were going to quit. Definitely, did not see that coming at all. It's hard to know sometimes who soured on who.
Management! So complicated....

How do you know that? Honest question? He’s had foot issues for half a decade…

He said the problem has been "off and on".

His Senior year in HS & the AAU/Club season that followed he was a stud. So much so that he was ranked a 4* player, #81 in the country & Michigan landed him.

Point being he HAS been healthy! He just reaggravated the injury last season.

The hope is it'll have healed with a year of rest/recovery. Also, I assume the Mn training staff was able to check it out & presumably he worked out for the Gopher staff (Kordell did). Plus, I'm an optimist. 😀

@gopherbadgerman Winters talks about it beginning at the 14:53 mark of the Go Blue podcast.
I am the only one reading this as a nothing burger? He got hurt, was “out,” but was still torching everyone at practice?

The whole “hurt since high school” seems like a crutch to simply get him the medical redshirt. The podcasters picked up on it and quickly changed the subject.

I think Winters is a guy you take this gamble on.

Regardless, I hope we do get one more experienced versatile sf/guard that can play a few positions just to have someone a little more seasoned that can plug a few holes if need be.

Winters is exactly the type talent this program needs.
I dont think the injury is anything to worry about, but I don't care if it ends up costing the upcoming season. We're not going anywhere without a talent upgrade.

Baloney he was a top 60 recruit 2 years ago. His foot was fine then
Great .. HE SAID IT.. straight outa the horses mouth... I believe him saying his foot has been an issue over you posting with nothing to back it up

It's been an issue since his fresh yr in H.S....

My understanding is that it has been a playable but not optimal injury. It sounded like he wanted to take corrective action on it this summer- whatever that is. Maybe it just needs some cleanup and he is ready by fall. I would have to believe that the U's doctors think so.

Im not saying this is a bad signing... But it lowers my expectations when the player himself says his foot hasn't been "right" in 5 years.... That's all

Yeah, I think it is okay to take a few of the understudies from that group.
There is no way that 6'7" white guy throwing down windmill jams and hitting shots from everywhere couldn't have played 15 minutes / game for the Gophers in 2022-2024.
