Gopher-centric Portal Short List

It's sad to see how fans speak of our players now, especially someone like Willis who worked extremely hard, and was a positive leader throughout the year despite the injury. In the arena he was always talking with teammates, encouraging them, hyping the crowd. He came in pretty highly respected averaging nearly 17 points and over 5 assists at previous stop in a respected mid-major conference.

Hope he does well at his next stop and wish him the best! The same for Vaihola and others.
I don’t hear anyone wishing ill on him. He was recruited for a couple weeks, collected NIL, played 7 mediocre games for us, and decided to enter the transfer portal after an injury plagued season. I agree he seemed like a very solid teammate, but let’s not pretend fans should be devastated over this.

Based on the shear number of players in the portal (especially 6’2” guards), he’s 100% replaceable if he’s looking for more money or a change of scenery. Medved can’t afford to spend so many resources on injured players again. I’d suggest you don’t get too attached or sentimental about players in this NIL age.

So which is it? Either there are “closers”, or bags.

You spend more time here than anyone taking about how much guys are getting paid, it doesn’t seem to matter if you are a closer or not.
In the illustration...if you are a closer he doesn't get to Iowa. And in NIL fantasy money if you tack on another $200k to help you close the deal imo that's a closer.
I offer my opinion based on what I read. I try to learn what $ amounts seem to be consistent. I often answer questions on money so somebody else saves some time digging through the internet for an answer.
Bottom line...in 2026 NCAA Basketball, money is a fairly large component. Even if you are Louisville closing still matters. "We are going to talk to Duke and Kentucky tomorrow." Think that didn't happen?
If I had to choose one, it's really not close...the closer is the most important part. If you follow business...sales is a pretty big factor. Some guys sell way more cars than others, some guys sell way more houses than others etc etc....they can close deals better. Simple really.

I agree with you. The other scenario is the possibility these guys are not having their deals renewed by the Gophers. Maybe they can stay at a free or reduced rate idk..everybody only has 15 roster spots....so maybe they can't stay. Or they can jump in the portal to find a new opportunity. According to reports...most of these guys have agents. The agents have an idea if there is a market for their guy.

So...you seem to be a guy who thinks "Glengarry Glen Ross" is a documentary.

How do you think this works? That a kid comes in for a visit in a vacuum? You already wrote that all these guys have agents, and if the agent is not with them, do you think they are advised to do which of the following:

1. Boy, if the bring in the closer, and makes it seem like you just don't have any other choice than to take that deal, you better jump on it!
2. No matter what they say, we are still exploring other teams, we are going to weigh our options for the benefit of you and your family. And I shouldn't say this out loud, as your agent, but if I can get your pay increased...guess what...I just gave myself a raise.

I imagine you still think being a closer means dusting off your copy of Zig Ziglar, grabbing a legal pad and trying to utilize the Ben Franklin close on a kid and his agent like they just wandered in off a school field trip.

"If you follow business..."

Yeah...I'm in a fantasy business league, so I follow "business" pretty closely.

Savvy people don't get closed, weak minded people who need someone else to do their thinking get closed. Some sales people are better at recognizing those people.

Wow! Thank you! I had no idea I wasn't in position to negotiate contracts for the Gophers.
I'm on message board offering takes for people to disagree with and boost their own self esteem telling me what an idiot I am. That's my position. I'm aware what my place is. Thank you, though for your concern in reminding me.
What an idiotic reply! ;)

He's just following the Cade Tyson trajectory -- terrible year at UNC, visit MN and IA in April, commit to us in June, fringe NBA prospect this time next year.

Edit: Nobody should be upset he is visiting Iowa. Do we want guys who have no competition for their services? Should Kyan Evans be insulted that we contacted Jaylen Petty?

I expect McCollum is pitching him right now on the chance to replace Bennett Stirtz on an Elite 8 team...but at the same time I doubt he is their plan A.

Yes someone mentioned him a week ago or so, I was very intrigued as they said he was at CSU with Niko, and then again surprised he was ranked 95th so I included him in this list

Thanks for the info! I think he would be a good pickup if the Medved decides to go in that direction.

Amen! In this environment, they are no longer "just kids." They are paid professionals and, from what we are hearing, it's not like they're just getting pocket money.

The bad parts of this system are that it produces the opposite of levelling the playing field and that good players can and do leave for more money. The good part of this system is that you don't have to be weighed down for multiple years by players who aren't producing or simply don't fit what you are trying to accomplish.

At this time Evans seems to be the guy most people want. I was curious so I watched the NCAA Memphis game and Evans shot the three very well, 23 points, 4 asst 0 TO's, has quick hands, was not a drive threat, lacks size and strength, played 36 minutes, as PG sometimes struggled against a bigger and stronger defender, played hard on D but due to his size had some issues especially fighting screens.

Just a one game sample, but its obvious he is the opposite of Reynolds. Is he all BIG material? No. I think he will fit well with Niko's scheme.

If he is a Gopher, I think he would pair well with Asuma.

I don't think of him as the guy I want most, but he's just the most logical.

-Shouldn't break the bank
-Familiarity with Niko/system
-Good shooter
-Good ball handler
-Acclimation should be immediate, given that familiarity

He's just the perfect guy to bring in with one year of eligibility left. He should hit the ground running, and we can focus our efforts on three/four more impactful players with some dry powder remaining.

Perfectly stated. He sounds a lot like Cedric Tomes profile, nice to have him as a one year guy at a reasonable price.

Yeah, he reminds me of Peyton Willis.

You can't trust someone who chooses to move to Iowa. John Wayne Gacy moved to Iowa. I hope Kyan does not act like John Wayne Gacy.
Thats a pretty low bar lolol. To be fair, the only notable things to come out of Iowa is Slipknot and Luka Garza
