What's Next 26-27 Roster

Just a thought or a question? If Tori O. plays point guard and scores over 5,000 points, totals over 1,000 assists and is the career leading rebounder for Minnesota girls...why wouldn't she start for the Gophers as a freshman on a team that doesn't have a point guard?
I think we are recruiting a backup point guard.
She plays through contact, she handles the ball well, she shares the ball. She's not cat quick, but that's not going to change any time soon. Battle wasn't cat quick either. Probably be nice to only be double teamed occasionally versus often as a 5,000 point scorer.
53 points vs Minnehaha
She played the sisters of the poor on most nights. That's why.

It's going to be a giant leap in competition for her, and trusting a PG to run a Big Ten team with Sweet Sixteen aspirations is foolish.

True freshmen play all over the country for power conference teams. The goal is to get the best roster possible and some really good competition on the roster for playing time. Tori looks more athletic than Johnson (From Duluth) does IMO. That will help her get on the court.

Tori scored 34 points with 14 rebounds against Rosemount this year. She is also rated #39 in the nation by 247 sports. She could definitely start as a freshman in the big ten

The problem is Natalie Kussow is also up there in the national recruiting class rankings, so if we were going to bring a freshman into the starting lineup, there's tough competition. What a good problem to have though!

Freshman PGs often struggle or don't live up to expectations.

It's smarter and more prudent to bring in a proven and reliable PG, and let TO be a backup next year.

Don't put all your eggs in a Freshman PG basket. If TO struggles, there wouldn't be much of a plan B at PG. That's not acceptable.

I'm sure we will get a proven point guard out the portal but we should not assume that Tori will be the backup
That"s fine, but the new PG needs to be more than a 10 minute per game backup.

I think Kussow could start ahead of Tori but the position we are trying to fill is point guard and Kussow is not a point guard.

Maybe I ought rephrase, summer competition is elite !! Although I have seen Little Sisters of the poor, they’re darn good !! 😎

I agree 100% they need another good point guard. But, Tori has to play significant minutes to develop. She is also going to get better coaching than in high school to accelerate her development....and they practice like 16 weeks before the first game versus 10 days.
Grace averaged 34 minutes as a freshman, McKinney 28 minutes as a freshman. And it's the portal era...she needs to play for lots of reasons...#1 to develop, to get better.

That's all true. But, as freshmen, they didn't play on a team loaded with upperclassmen that has expectations of making noise in the NCAA Tournament.

I wouldn't want to rely on a freshman pg if I'm Braun, McKinney, or GG.

You need to get the best pg you can in the portal and make TO earn time. If she can't handle competing and earning her spot, then she doesn't belong here anyway.

I'd love to get McGill and tell TO to beat her out or play bench minutes until you're able to beat out someone in front of you.

Sure, but how realistic in the portal era is McGill to Minnesota? We definitely need post help and that'll probably spend our budget. McGill story

She went in with a no contact tag. That means she already has a deal with someone else, and id bet my house that's not Minnesota. Id bet SC, UCLA, LSU type.

Probably a blue blood or deep pockets like TCU.

It doesn’t necessarily mean she has a deal with someone else; it’s more so her agent is handling and they don’t want 1000 calls.
We know she’s not coming to MN; but, I will
Mention I saw a tweet saying Coach P reached out. I can’t remember the guys name, and of course we don’t know if its even true. I’d be happy knowing we at least tried.

Didn't know if I should post this here or the transfer thread:

"Sources told on3 that MN will be hosting Purdue forward Lana McCarthy for a visit this weekend. McCarthy, a 6-4 sophomore averaged 7.8 points and 4.7 rebounds this year for the Boilermakers. She entered the transfer portal with a "do not contact" tag and MN is one of the programs she's interested in"

I am surscribed to On3 so will continue to monitor any transfer tea.

Because it's a slow day at work:
Let's say for fun we land McCarthy; what/who would you like to see for the other two spots?
I'm kind of torn. I really want to see Ode come home; but, would you then look for another true center/big or more of PG for the last spot? We could also see them play more small ball with Woodson at the five. I know they did a little of this last year before she got hurt.

I'm going true center/big (w/great defense and decent scoring) followed by PG or a solid guard who can learn. You can't teach height or athleticism but you can teach skills. I'm just thinking back to Rebecca Lobo saying during the tournament (paraphrased) it doesn't matter how good you are if the other girl defending you is a foot taller. This was noted in reference to two Centers battling it out under the basket. I also hope and know that the Gophers are probably scouring the mid-majors for great players who could step up to the Big 10 level if given the chance.

Disclaimer: I'm just an avid fan and not Coach P, nor do I claim to have her amazing instinct or coaching abilities.
