All Things 2026 Transfer Portal Thread

Really tough to know what we have in Shinholster. He showed some flashes but he was also a true freshman being forced to do more then he was probably ready to do based on all of our injuries.
I feel like Shinholster has quick active hands on defense and good shot form but just needs strength. I hope he stays if it doesn’t cost too much. Seems like a kid that could take a nice jump with some added bulk.

It rhymes with 'hero hercent'
30% of his 253 EOs have been court challenged by the left. I say that because there are plenty here foolish enough to believe you.

Agree 32/12 so he took care of the ball.. shots a tad flat but he can work on that…

No portal window for DII transfers

What the heck? We'll name our school after Sam Houston and then we'll call ourself the Bearkats??? Not the Ravens, not the Texans, not the Governors but the Bearkats?

I hate the current transfer rules because they make following the game way less fun, but curtailing them is probably unconstitutional, and despite what Trump thinks, an EO does not end-run the Constitution.

But pens and phones have a better chance.

The best way for limiting transfers is through enforceable contracts. It’s time. If they want to get paid, they need to make a mutually beneficial commitment.

In what way does it end run the constitution to have rules and guidelines for a league? Is it unconstitutional for a league to establish salary caps? Is the draft unconstitutional in sports? Rules create a competitive playing field and prevent the kind of corruption we see today. Make rules and if players don't like them- make your career in another league.

I think he would be a good pickup if they can get him for a decent price. We don't know how healthy Vaihola will be and this guy can do some things Vaihola can't. He's certainly big enough.
Looks like he didn't break the starting lineup until January. Had his best game of the year against Virginia Tech, scoring 25 points on 3/8 3PT shooting and 4/5 FT shooting. Having a big man that can be a consistent threat would be really nice. When Grove had the green light to launch a couple wide open 3's early in the Baylor game I was really hoping he had been working on it and they were gonna go in.

That said he doesn't look like a rim protector (only 11 blocks on the year, and a lower block % than Grove or Vaihola). He is a little better rebounder than Grove, Vaihola is a much better rebounder than either.

71% FT shooter for a big man is nice.

He had 23 assists in 830 minutes on the year (1.1 per 40). Grayson Grove had 53 assists in 659 minutes (3.2 per 40) and Vaihola had 2.9 per 40 in his last full year. Not sure if it's just the role in the offense but I was impressed with Grove's passing this year.

A couple of things. The salary caps in the professional leagues were set by collective bargaining and not by any outside force, putting them in a different realm beyond what this Executive Order addresses. I highly doubt this Executive Order would automatically create a more competitive playiing field unless you believe the playing field was more level prior to the advent of NIL and the portal (the folks in Indiana likely disagree). There's nothing here that corrects the imbalance in facilities or other outside donations that have always played into competitive advantage for some. As for corruption, a lot of what was considered corrupt prior to the current paradigm is now above ground. Make it corrupt again and it will just move back underground.

Is it unconstitutional for a league to establish salary caps?
Potentially, yes. The caps that exist came from agreements between the league/owners and the player’s union. If MLB, which needs a cap like nobody’s business, tried enforcing one without union approval they’d probably get sued for collusion, and they’d probably lose, given how many times they’ve lost collusion cases. I’m not a lawyer, but in the case of NCAA BB, I see a pretty obvious argument that limiting transfers limits players’ earning ability, and does it in a way that almost nobody else deals with.

I agree with whoever said enforceable contracts are the answer.

The guys doing the Field of 68 podcast were saying they recently talked to Bryan Hodgson the new Providence coach and I guess he was saying that every recruit he has talked to since talking the job has asked for at least a $1M. Can you imagine what Niko is dealing with at a Big1G program? F'ing Insanity.

Love your moniker.

I not looking at Kapke as a 30+ minutes per game guy but even according to Niko we need some additional size. Vaihola has his strengths (assuming he's healthy), Grove has his strengths, but I would rather see a big man who can shoot 70% from the line in the game when the team is in the bonus than to see Vaihola or Grove in there. Kapke's 3-point shooting ability is just icing on the cake. His assist ratio may be low but I suspect that would improve in Niko's offense.

I don't like the idea of players just being free agents every year. I think it makes a joke out of college sports. The premise of the sport is that you are supposed to be a student at that school representing that school. Now the players are repping themselves, playing for themselves and using the school. The sport was way better in every way, in my opinion, when building a roster was based on developing guys and building a team year over year. It is never going to be an equal playing field and that's not the goal.

I would agree its insanity, but also since no one can really sign outside of grad transfers, everyone is going to start high just in case. Id bet 90% of those kids settle for a good deal less.

What about embracing the going big trend. Vaihola at the 5, BK at the 4 and JCJ at the 3.

Would probably need 2 solid shooters paired with such a lineup

True!
But that ship has passed.

Keeping the politics out of it...the President does not have the authority to unilaterally tell them what to do. EOs are not there to replace the Legislative Branch or overrule the marketplace. That the last 40+ years has lead to this kind of executive overreach is ridiculous. EOs are often not worth the paper they are printed on and can we wiped away pretty easily. You really want the rules to change every time a new President is elected?

The system we have is broken...but the President has no power to enforce anything. Its up to the NCAA, the schools and the players to figure out a better system. Problem is, just like politics, money is free flowing making the whole thing a muddled mess.

With the way things have played out...contracts are the only way.

I don't disagree, but I also don't see the clock being turned back.

The portal is officially open for business on Tuesday. I've been in search of a publicly available model that attempts to predict how successful a player would be in a different conference. I found this from Kalidrafts (a data scientist named Nick Kalinowski). Kalidrafts focuses on box plus minus (BPM) and the models the likelihood a player would provide poor, below average, average, above average, or excellent BPM in a Power 6 or Mid-Major conference. The model also shares the teams it considers a "best fit" for the player, though I believe these are naive to coaching changes.

As of today, the site is still showing last year's players. I've very hopeful it will update on Tuesday, but it was interesting to review how the model viewed the most significant Gopher transfers from this season:
  • Jaylen Crocker-Johnson - The model believed Crocker-Johnson would have an excellent BPM for a Power 6 team, Minnesota was not listed as a fit.
  • Bobby Durkin - The model believed Durkin would have an excellent BPM for a Power 6 team, Minnesota was not listed as a fit.
  • Cade Tyson - The model believed Tyson would have an average BPM for a Power 6 team, Minnesota was not listed as a fit.
  • Langston Reynolds - The model believed Reynolds would have an above average BPM for a Power 6 team and Minnesota was listed as one his best fits.
The limitations of a data-only model are visible here. Given Tyson's lack of playing time at UNC, it was difficult to predict he could transfer to another high-major and thrive. However, I would have been even more enthusiastic about Reynolds if I'd looked at this model when he committed. Reynolds was probably considered the 6th or 7th most important transfer by most on this board, but perhaps we should have expected more before the season began.

Hopefully Willis and Vaihola are back for another year. Kalidrafts predicted Willis would be have an average BPM for a Power 6 team and Vaihola would have an above average BPM.

I'd love to know if anyone is aware of other publicly available prediction models. I'm sure there will be commits and targets that we don't know much about, it'd be great to have a few neutral, data-based resources to reference.
