The year one blues has got this board in a downward spiral. I'm surprised there isn't a "Fire NIko" thread yet.

FFS ..... Get a grip guys.

This guy can coach. He has had more injuries than I can remember this team ever having and he is still competing. (might have been a Pitino/Tubby year that was close)

We will be better soon.

ALL HAIL NIKO!

What?!?! You’re reading way too much into reactions.

But let’s be honest. This loss sucked. For the first time in B10 play, we had the better talent and responded with a lousy first half. Kudos to the guys for rallying, but at the end of the day we did just enough to lose, which is now a pattern. I am still very bullish on Medved, as is nearly everyone here, but this was a very Ben-era style loss. If the board didn’t respond to this loss to some extent in the same way it responded to similar losses under Ben, it wouldn’t be right

Wait, what?! FFS, what are you talking about?

Nearly all are optimistic about Niko and understand he needs better talent. That doesn't mean we're not frustrated we've lost 7 straight BT games. And yesterday is a loss we can't have. The frustration after yesterday is understandable.

Weird OP.

Go Gophers!!

Doesn't seem like there's any spiral here. Think most people are pretty optimistic.
Agreed. I think most of us knew what was most likely coming this year. We're also seeing what a talented coach can bring to the table in regards to schematics and getting the most out of his talent.

From what I've seen so far this season, it's even better than I expected from Niko and this team. Moral victories mean nothing to me. I find enough satisfaction knowing we have a competent coach taking us in a different direction.

Now we just need to help Medved build a better roster if the U really cares about this program. It would be money well invested with a guy like Niko running the show.

Outside of the typical malcontents on this board I don't think anyone is down on the hire.

Doesn't mean the losing streak isn't frustrating as hell, especially when a bunch of the losses could have been wins had things broken slightly differently.

I'm pretty optimistic that Medved can get us back to being a winning program.
It looks like the lack of depth it catching up with us, we did so much to get the game back to even but didn't have enough to get us to the finish line.
I hope the losses aren't starting to take their toll on the team psyche, we need a win bad. Lets see how we bounce back against MSU.

In the Wisconsin game we had 6 scholarship players out. Wisconsin had none and we played em tight. It is what it is this year, I am hopeful for next year. But I have been hopeful for the next year for the last 6 and it hasn't worked out yet. I think Niko changes that cycle, but I am an optimist that nothing ever good happens in sports to.

I know it is 2026 and the Transfer Portal is real and NIL is here but...IF we are able to keep the core of this team intact, and get our injured players back, and the three freshman arrive, here is what we would have: Crocker-Johnson-Willis-Asuma-Durkin-Grove-Omot-Shinholster-Vaihola-Anderson-Mpoyi-Tomes and one more spot (maybe Stephens or maybe another Big). That is another team I would love to see--this one because of how they play and that one because they could win a ton of games. The future is bright GopherHolers! Grab your shades and put them on.

You’re surprised that a game thread, down double digits against a winless Big 10 team amidst a 6 game losing streak had some negative undertones?

Is this your first time on Gopherhole?

This board has been overwhelmingly positive, but it’s ok to recognize you have to take some steps forward against the bottom of the league.

Nobody is complaining about Nikko. People are just sick of losing. Did Nikko make any mistakes? Yes, three: Omot, Stephens, and Turner. No more convalescents this offseason!

Reading the last 2 pages of Sunday's game thread ...... sky is falling

Take a break big man. The team lost to an inferior team. This has been the most positive I’ve seen Gopherhole possibly ever. And it’s in the midst of a sub .500 record

Fans can be upset with losing but the overall tone is very good considering.

Even Nikko Naysayers are turning the proverbial corner.

Tjat will happen when you bring in entirely new roster not gonna go 10/10 on portal additions, hopefully next year we only have to go 3/3

Just about took what I was going to say word for word.

I'm willing to give Niko some time but we need more players on Tyson's level. No, I don't mean they all need to score 18-20. I mean real Big Ten dudes who can play with other Big Ten dudes. Tyson and Reynolds are gone after this season. The recruits seem like descent prospects but if two of them don't hit (I mean borderline starters. The big better start, we have zero at center) then we need two Tyson's from the portal or things are going to go pear shape pretty quick.

Honest question, who is going to be the leading scorer next year and is that player on the team currently?

Asuma and Johnson are nice players but if they are the go to guy we might be a worse team next year.

Tyson and Reynolds are our two best players...they still would be if the injured guys were healthy. You can't lose your two best players and not replace them with two new best players and be better.

I'm hopeful the freshman big is exciting. But he is raw. Highly unlikely he is our best player as a freshman and we are good. He is a prospect not somebody who has proven he can play at this level. But he is our only wild card out of returners and incoming. Willis played 7 games and was 45% from the free throw line and 18% from 3. Vaihola is great at doing stuff to help you win but scoring a lot probably isn't likely.
After that we got a lot of Jimmies and Joes in our 11 guys.

That means instead of the other teams best defenders hounding Tyson and Reynolds....they'll make Asuma into a turnover machine and Crocker Johnson will be forcing 3's. Not a winning formula. You think we struggle scoring now? Outlook not good even if Niko is amazing unless we find 2 or 3 studs. Gotta find our two best players, preferably from 3 candidates....that's where the money goes.
Just having 10, 11 12 healthy guys who can't play doesn't do much but create descension. "Coach, I need more minutes, I'm better than Joey." Maybe so, truth is you all suck and we can't play everybody. Need two or three studs.

Reynolds is not their second best player. Replacing Tyson is important but this is a very pessimistic take. With a normal 8 man rotation this team would have 4-5 more wins. The lack of depth has killed them.

I am not so sure we lost to an inferior team.

Aren't we both now something like 10 - 12

Ahhh....so your mistake was basing anything off of an in game thread while the game is going on. Those threads are complete dumpster fires most of the time as it is unreal how hot and cold some people blow during the course of a game. :)

Penn State game was frustrating because it was a great chance to get a win and snap the losing streak but unfortunately the team had a clunker of a first half. So it was understandable that the negativity level in that thread was going to be really high.

Overall though most seem to get that this season is what it is at this point with all the injuries.

It’s an absolute given we need to replace Tyson and Reynolds with hopefully better talent, but the conversation is if the five stay they should be better than they were this year plus the freshman coming in

When Tyson committed here did you think he was going to have the kind of year he has had?

Obviously we can't just role out the same guys minus Tyson and Reynolds and expect the team to get better. But Niko can build on what he should have coming back and go from there.

There are going to be portal additions, and guys like Omot, Stephens, Willis, Vaihola and Turner are all X-Factors who we saw very little out of in some cases and nothing in others due to injury.

I get it, it is tough to be optimistic after the way things went under Johnson but there are some really positive signs in the way the team in playing in spite of some serious roster limitations.

If Turner is on the team next year, one of two things is clear:
1) he knows he’s out of shape and has committed to prepare his body so he can be in the rotation, or
2) he doesn’t realize that a team down to 6 healthy players that still doesn’t put you in the game is never going to put you in the game next year when everyone is healthy.
In the words of many of the younger people on this board, “he gone.”

Yeah. I can't imagine why he would stay. I doubt Chance Stephens will either. Both would be buried on the bench.
