Shooter: It still looks as if Ben Johnson, 44, who is taking the year off since his firing last year, will end up as an NBA assistant next year.

Go Gophers!!

Ben seems best fit for an assistant role. I wish him all the best in his life. It just didn't work out well for him as head coach of the Gophers.
Ben seems best fit to be a HS basketball player. That is literally the ONLY position he has had success. He was not successful as a college basketball player. He was not successful as a college assistant coach. He was historically bad as a college head coach. I suggest he stay away from any and all basketball.

I disagree. He wasn't good as a head coach, but his kids never quit. He can X & O at a college level. He just couldn't run the entire program to be successful. Guarantee he knows more than any person posting on the GH.

100% agree that he knows more about basketball AND would be a better coach than anyone on GH. Especially me. That being said please point to anything for Ben post his hs player days where he has been successful in the basketball world. He was a player on the BIG team that lost EVERY BIG game they played (one season). Should he have taken the MN job? Of course. Was the administration idiot’s to even entertain an interview? Obviously. But, now that he faked it until he made it so to speak he should have done what the vast majority of fired coaches do. Put out a vague statement thanking the fans, players and community for the experience.

Averaging 11.5 pts on 51.8% shooting and 40% from 3 as a college senior is not successful? And how are you determining his success as an assistant coach?

This is my hope for him. This guy gave EVERYTHING to the Gophers the past 4 years. NIL isn't for him (and quite honestly, I'd hate it too), but he's a great coach and it would be awesome if he was an assistant for the Pistons with a few other former Gophers, could just focus on developing players and the game he loves.

👀 Looks into the future to see who is rehashing the "why was he hired?" topic. 👀

I ran the numbers of him as an assistant when he was the head coach here. Everything he touched turned bad. Even at super stable places like Xavier and UNI.

Well just as an assistant at Minnesota he was the primary recruiter for Coffey, Oturu, Gabe K, Jarvis Johnson, Nate Mason and Jordan Murphy. He also had McKinley Wright and Tyrese Haliburton ready to commit before Pitino nixed it in favor of Jelly fam and Marcus Carr. Your job as an assistant is to get players and that fell off a cliff under Pitino when Ben left. Ben will find work as an assistant if he wants it

Joined date incredibly suspicious on this account to be saying Ben Johnson had Haliburton locked in before Pitino got in the way.

He needs to talk to the press first and give a statement about his time here thanking the U.
Seriously? For what reason? Maybe he thanked the U personally and forgot to tell you? Or maybe the FBJN (Fire Ben Johnson Now) crowd would hope that he cowers for them? Or makes excuses or comments allowing them to rip him anew for another 50 pages on GH?

Admit it! There is nothing on Gods Green Earth that will ever satiate the FBJN cabals desire to see Johnson in front a mic one more time. Cower, apologize, whimper, rationalize or express appreciation, none of it will ever fill that void!
