B1G game 1: Gophers host Maryland 12-7-25

I would called time-out just to gather composure after second turnover in overtime. Too many missed shots especially all the lay-ups Hart missed. Can"tmiss that many easier attempts, give up to much possession and time. Still a shocked about the loss.

At least she can win some games again in the WBIT!
This team is making the tournament and you can quote me on that on Selection Sunday!

Everyone is acting like it was the end of the world to lose to a really good team with a coach who has a history of winning championships. And I can bet half of the people with the doom and gloom were on threads here before this game saying our offense can't compete with the best in the conference and that we'd get only 6 wins in the Big Ten, so didn't expect a close game with Maryland. The path to the tournament never needed to run through Maryland, but it would have helped make it almost certain.

There are many more winnable games ahead and I can bet this team will be practicing their inbounding after all of those mistakes.

How you coach P lovers feel now? That loss is all on her! Use your damn timeout! What a mess!
Absolutely right. We had a timeout! We get in our end before allof the disaster, trying to inbound, and MD would have to foul!

What's happened to Braun? She used to be money. Now I cringe when she's going to shoot.

As for all the talk about Mack.....perhaps she was offered and perhaps she wasn't. At the end of the day, it didn't appear she wanted to stay home. We know that some players want to move elsewhere after high school and you can't do anything about that.

And, we gave this game away. Just brutal to watch some of the turnovers and dumb plays. It's on the whole team and the whole staff. And, they will recover.

How do two players that make 19-21 FT shoot 4-28 from floor.
That’s what I was thinking during the game, they are so confident at the line but the field is an adventure. When Braun makes a shot she looks surprised and relieved

The 3 she made in OT she even hesitated. Definitely lacking some confidence.

Nobody wants to watch Wisconsin (even though their game is close) so the people in charge of BTN decided to have this game go on forever instead. :)

Wisconsin beat #20 Michigan State by double-digits so Wisconsin has more ranked wins this season alone than the Gophers have in 6+ years (36 straight losses and counting).

This really good Maryland team is missing 4 players with ACL injuries. I don't think this Maryland team will end up being that good. Missing too many key players this year.

Well said. I give Maryland credit they played hard and physical… impressive after finding out a few hours before tip one of their top players is done for the year…

Mack stat line. 49 minutes,16pts. 8 rebounds, 6 assists. Pretty good for a player not offered by Dawn and she thought was soft.

The next three non conference games are must wins, including at Drake.

Also, with the BIG schedule for the Gophers, the game at Indiana I feel is also a must win if there’s any hope. Going 0-2 to start with what they have for the next 8 games would be hard to overcome.

I really really hope this loss stings, burns, and puts some fire into the team. Sometimes a loss like this can be turned in a positive direction.

Coach P looked very defeated in the post game presser clips I saw so will be very interesting to see the direction this team makes the rest of the way.

Finally, I miss Woodson. Battle HAS to be better. Braun HAS to get stronger.

You must be some type of special to not see how terrible the coaching was in that game. Get a damn clue.
Still haven't answered my question. There's your special. The coach doesn't make stupid passes nor does she dribble into corners. Also doesn't try to beat the press by throwing cross court instead of diagonally. Glad I laid it out for you? I feel dumber for having to do that. At least you got your name right.

Can we please run an offense that features Tori and GG.

Agree 100%. Despite their lower recruiting profiles, compared to Braun and Battle, and Braun’s and Battle’s seniority, this needs to be Tori’s and GG’s team. Tori and GG are the 2 best players. Braun and Battle are both playing great defense, and Battle has been playing a great floor game, but a goal for Braun and Battle needs to be to facilitate more for GG and Tori (and Glenn) and to shoot less. Battle seems to have adopted this mind set, but Braun is trying to do too much. She should not be the team’s bell cow.

Separately, feel bad for Battle’s last turnover. Her and 1 was a great and needed play that got the team to overtime, and her free throws were money. She deserved better, as did GG, Tori and the whole team.

Still stunned...didn't see we lost a 14 point half time lead until after the game. Got home in time mid 4th quarter to see both teams dueling both ways which was fun and entertaining and seemed OT was fitting not knowing the halftime lead, except really no play to run the last 17 seconds of regulation for chance to win there even after calling timeout.

Then OT back and forth tight game was lot of fun. Finally ran a good offensive play and nice feed from Braun to McKinney for layup to go up 3 with 35 secs in OT was huge and thought we really had a chance. Big stop on D and rebound and 1 of 2 FT 4 pt lead with 25 sec left and getting excited. Then far away foul by McKinney(little soon and little far away as could have force a bit more clock maybe), but ok with as didn't allow 3 pt shot try. Mack goes 1 of 2 Get the ball in after a TIMEOUT!!! and Battle knocks down both free throws to go up 5 with 19 seconds.

After watching Men's team take down Indiana, thinking we got a real good chance to take Maryland finally here! Then we give up( I know far away and know don't want to foul the 3 PT, but it wasn't that far and mostly uncontested and makeable which it was)

Here is my other question? Leading by 5 Maryland doesn't have a TO and has to take it up the court. Press them slight to force time going up court and if they do get across the half court line...FOUL immediately! Maryland struggling at the line and worst case they make 2 you are still up 3 and it again is a must foul with less then 10 seconds. Even then, if you can't get the ball in, you chuck the ball the length of the court for a race and they need to go the length and you can foul again as you are still up 3.

Instead they drain the 3 and we inbound it to the death zone of the trap in the corner and leave our player out to dry and get turnover. They go right inside and get easy 2. McKinney was fast to break the press, but then shot half court shot with 2 .5 seconds left? Learning curve here, I know that is practice, but actually had 2 players wide open down court for good 3 point look. Now can't believe let the 5 point lead slip away for 2 OT and in little bit of can't believe that just happened.
2OT - Braun gets huge block and first possession and huge 3 to start and thinking ok...Still got this! Tough to see Braun struggling with the shooting as is getting some decent looks that we hope will soon fall! But even with that battling on D for the block after OT collapse was great! Battle although struggling early made some key Free throws and we got the lead to 99 to 90 with Braun's FT with 54 seconds left and was really thinking there is no way we could let this one get away. Iffy foul on Battle trying to box out gives them 2 FTs but sitll 99 to 92 with 44 sec left.

We have 1 timeout here that advances the ball over half court line! NEED TO CALL IT! Veteran coaching staff, no excuses, Lisa Bluder calling the game was baffled after seeing the issue in 1st OT. Reason is now ball is over the half court line and forces Maryland to foul as can't even let 5 seconds go to get a steal and still have to go length of the court and down 7 and likely not getting and 1s. Need to put the players in the best position and that a TO right away instead of letting 2 costly turnovers get the opponent back in the game before the timeout.

Then after our timeout, didn't seem like we had any play set(do we ever?) with 35 sec left? Did we think Maryland was going to foul? Was there a plan for a play to be run, we were throwing some wild passes until the one finally sailed away out of bounce. Maryland gets a TO and only takes them 2 seconds for pretty easy layup for the lead. I still can't be leave this? How? Did we really just lose. Inbounds pass with 2 seconds left, Braun had a bit more time again 2 seconds is a lot of time but chucks the missed 3 and yup...lost. Stunned, stinks, but yet since in big 10 they will have their chances to make the dance, but some point we are going to have to beat some high quality teams, which is the ? to date. Ugh.....stunned but need learn and move on as lot of tough season left, will be interesting to see how we respond for rest of big 10 play. Rah!
