Gophers Fleck on closing the gap against top teams: "...Just because you want that doesn't mean that's going to happen."

He was scheduled to make $425 K before Heatherman left, but I can't find any info about an increase after his promotion. I would assume he got a bump upon assuming play calling duties probably somewhere along the lines of what Harbaugh made last year. Harbaugh around 730 K this year, up from $600 K last year. At year three Im not sure Harbaugh even a top 50 OC in salary, if we want one of the 25 or so OC that are currently over a million dollars than we need to amp up our salary pool. KC is making double what Harbaugh is at Rutgers
I agree that I would like to see more experienced coordinators. My biggest concern is evaluation of recruits at both the HS and portal level specifically on the Oline.

Is PJ wearing capri pants under orders from Heather?
I don't know if it's under orders, but if she's involved, I'm sure it's resulting in him getting more tail from his wife than most of us are getting from ours. Nothing gets the wife going more than a sweatshirt and a pair of jeans that have been worn for five days straight and have the crispness of a satin sheet

That's fair we haven't hit on a lot of oline recruits post Covid and the portal additions have not been good this year. Obviously it's too early to evaluate 2025 and even 2024, although Roy was clearly a hit. 2023 gave us Johnson and Daniels and McConnell but they transferred. 2022 gave us Beers but that's it and 2021 gave us nothing. On the one hand Callahan has put three guys into the NFL, so I think he has built some equity but obviously if the decrease in line play continues onto next year, after three years in a row it's definitely a trend and a problem.

Hello, anyone home?

Asan example between Iowa and the U. Their President entertains recruits in her suite, does the President of the U even attend games?

a lot of $$$$. and over a long period of time. 15-20 years of winning 9 to 12 games. A couple conference titles and quite a few trips to the CFP. Maybe not even win a national title but compete for several. A couple Heisman candidates and maybe a Heisman winner. Also some players go on to star in the NFL. nothing major really.
To solve the $$$$ issue just need to finance a 20,000 - 30,000 seat expansion of The Bank and then get 20,000 - 30,000 more folks hopefully wearing maroon/gold to shell out a couple grand annually to fill those new seats.

It would be really cool if some of those newbies also kicked in 6 figures or so to help out the NIL budget.

Let me say it another way— our coordinators would have taken the job if we had offered them say 1/3 less or even more of a haircut. They don’t have options anywhere else that would pay anything close to what they are making. They are both overpaid for what they bring to the table. 9 rated dead last in PFF grade last game and shouldn’t be playing. Our LBer talent and play is lacking quite a bit. 49 should be out there a lot more.
I very much doubt they would have taken a tougher job for less money than what they were making as a position coaches. Math is clearly hard for you! You don't think Fleck would pursue better more expensive options with a bigger budget? There are position coaches making more money than our coordinators.

Have no idea. Just thought someone that dapper must have some help but who knows...all salesmen know you gotta dress for success.
I stand by the same thing I said about PJ‘s game planning he must not have a group of buddies who can call him out and tell him when he’s completely off track. His game plans and game coaching and the Capri pants are I think perfect examples.

I like how gopher fans simultaneously say fleck has nobody to get him back on track with his game planning and also say he doesn’t know Xs and Os so he gives all the power to his coordinators

Not you individually, just the fanbase collectively

Can you imagine if they asked you if you wanted to Daniel faalele size your fast food order 😁

That would have been awesome! Maybe give out a T-shirt if you finished it as well.

I would agree with this if we didn't see Iowa and other teams with far less money still compete every year and find ways to win without the extra money. It all comes down to coaching and PJ and company consistently get out-coached against these big schools.
I hear you but we don't know about the bold. I heard rumors about Iowa and others having "needle/ pill men" and bagmen as well. Could you imagine articles that have been written about Gopher sports programs being written in Iowa City or Lincoln, NE?

That is a fair point, but I was referring Iowa against the known NIL powers like OSU, Texas Tech, and now even Indiana, etc. Even before NIL and in their "down" years they have at least been competitive towards the top Big 10 teams.

Apparently you don't go to games or you'd know this answer. How do you know so much about Iowa?

My take - It does not ALL come down to coaching.

If I had my choice between a massive NIL fund or a top 5 coach, I’d take the NiL fund every time.

PJ is def a mid tier coach when it comes to in game coaching, but $10M more would absolutely get us more wins and significantly better recruits.

I agree. The easiest way for us to get better results is more money. Just about everything I've heard or read is we are near the bottom of the B1G in revenue. It's hard to expect upper tier results with lower tier money. I think PJ is doing pretty well getting us mid-tier results with low end money. There is a good chance we lose him if he has a couple good years because he'll be sick of trying to do more with less. There's also a good chance he gets fired for having lower tier results. In either case, it's very likely we all get a chance to see if we can do better soon enough.

The chances we get a lemon instead of a Kirk Ferentz or Curt Cignetti are extremely high. I'd say 40% lemon, 50% meh, 10% Kirk or Curt. Everyone's looking for those guys, but almost no one finds them. Who thinks our administration is smarter than theirs? I'm really not sure if PJ is "meh" or more than that and is just operating with too little money. For me, a couple more years will help flesh that out as the new NIL/portal/revenue sharing era continues to take shape. I know he's not a lemon. I still think he has potential to grow into a better coach. He's young enough to continue to improve.

I don't like to believe that money is the only issue. we have invested in a stadium, built the athletics facilities, and created lots of buzz around the program in the last few years. Although NIL $$s are part of the deal we should regularly be a top 25 team. One of the largest contributors to this is our ability to develop talent. We get great recruits and we should be getting more out of them over time. I think this falls on our position coaches. Fleck needs to keep looking for better position coaches each year and I think he has choose to work with his buddies rather then find the right crew. One major issue with this is that I am not sure the great position guys want to come work for Fleck with some of his wack-a-doodle cult like work habits. Football guys want to coach football not feel like they have to sign up for some aquatic worship religion.

Sure we have leaped past Wisconsin but it's kind of telling half the story. Wisconsin was a powerhouse that went to big bowl games constantly, they have fallen more than we have risen

2022 did have Tony Nelson in it and he has seen action in 5 games. But yeah, O-Line recruiting has been very hit and miss for sure.
