And I still even now support Coach Fleck. Definitely room to improve our best against I-O-W-A.

Still think Ferentz should be fired for QB ineptitude for a number of seasons.
 




1-8 vs. Iowa is not an accident. KF gets how to get his team ready for this game. PJ does not. This game was 31-0 before we even got a first down. This should not even happen against the national champions, yet we do it against our biggest rival who has the same record as us. Complete coaching incompetence all the way around.

Yeah, the defense wasn't really horrible. They gave up only 274 yards from scrimmage and they were on the field a lot.

The offense was horrifically putrid. Good thing we play one of the conference's worst defenses next week although that's no guarantee.

Jeebus, disastrous effort and game, but flush it and move on. Losing by 1 or 50 🤷‍♂️. Not excusing or happy - at all, but that was a Tyson Round 1 KO. Get ready for a winnable MSU game, and don’t lose twice to Iowa!!!!

Defense wasn’t horrible. Special teams, punting, was horrible. Can’t punt far. Try to punt OB and it goes 20 yards. Gave up a long punt return TD in which hardly anybody ever got near Wetjen. Gave up a pick 6 to a double covered receiver when there was an open receiver nearby. That is 14 gift points unrelated to the defense. 31-14=17. Gophs might have had a chance down 17-0 at the half. But the pick 6 and punt return TD broke their spirit. Iowa coaches special teams and considers them an offensive asset. PJ?

I don't know if they quit, but they were physically dominated on both lines and that is going to have to change if the program is going to be in the upper tier of the conference consistently. I don't mind losing a close or even moderately close game to anyone, but it's no fun to watch your team get manhandled and pushed around. Iowa may not have the most physically gifted skilled players, but they always push, hit, and keep hitting.

Iowa doesn’t have super donors. They have very good football minds at HC, OC and DC. I’d spend money there first.

Not to me!! Wisconsin is the biggest rival and I will say Iowa is #2, with Nebraska becoming #3 in my book!

Still thoroughly embarrassing!! Completely erases the good feelings from the week before..

Does Iowa have a big NIL budget? I honestly don't know. I think Fleck has used Ferentz as the model to emulate, but you can't be consistent if you are bringing in senior transfers like Ray and Marshall to start on the O-line and expect to establish and maintain consistency.

And that's not a rip on Ray or Marshall per se, but it's about being able to plug-and-play on the lines.
 

Bum Phillips quipped, "Bryant can take his'n and beat your'n, and then he can turn around and take your'n and beat his'n,". Fleck is the anti-Bryant.

Fleck can build and solidify a program but that's the ceiling. Time has shown that he and his staff are not top quality coaches.

Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota all play each other every year and all have generally similar resources. If one of those teams dominates another team year after year (with the dominated coaches too dumb to figure out why), the dominated team has a solid ceiling from ever achieving a special season.

Fleck can't beat Ferentz. Fleck's teams therefore always have a ceiling lower than it should be. It's time to move on.

Michigan State fans are probably saying "good thing we play one of the conferences worst offenses next week" so something has to give.

But the thing that I struggle with on takes like this is you are calling the winningest coach we’ve had in decades mediocre, as if we’ve been something more in generations.

I’m NOT a guy that doesn’t think we can improve over PJ, but calling him mediocre is objectively incorrect in the context of our team. If you want to compare him to Iowa, then yep - but sadly, for right now, he is the best we’ve had in years.

If he takes a new job I don’t think the sky will fall, but we need to land a solid coach or we will likely be marginally worse than right now.
 


In other news, the Badgers and Duck end the first Q tied at 0. Not watching the game, but I understand there is weather. Badgers have more yards on offense than do the Ducks. It is such an emotional difference for teams to be tied at the end of the first Q, rather than to be down 17-0. Game already over at 17-0.

Just like at Cal, this team was not ready for the game in any way, shape, or form.

The Iowa offense has been terrible for years, they brought in a good QB this year and all of the sudden they have great offensive minds. Agreed on Phil Parker though, that guy can coach.

This type of loss should not happen in the 9th year of a coach. Lots of us have witnessed a ton of bad losses over the years. It's obvious to me pj isn't the guy that's going to win more than 7 or so a year most seasons.

"Winningest coach" seems specious, much like Kirk "Garbage Time Stats" Cousins being a top ten NFL QB.
