CHARLIE JILEK Flips

I woke up this morning wondering what ole Jilek was up to!

Jk, huge kid and could grow a lot more too. Tape looks good and he’s kicking down doors with one of the best teams in MI. I’ll take it McMorris and Meza who??

Not gonna be a top 20 team when you never recruit a top 20 team.

Fleck's primary weakness.

Meh, they’ve been very good at pumping guys into the NFL annually so class ranking kinda feels irrelevant. While the talent level could and needs to go up (this current class and last year’s are steps in the right direction) to breakthrough into the playoff, I actually think the approach on game day is really what’s capping the program. You can play a ball control game by dinking and dunking your way down field too.

Would also say the obvious elephant in the room is NIL and if you want a top tier program then get to donating! I know Lindsey comes from a well to do family but he’s still going to probably come in at seven figures next year for the promise he’s shown. He may love the program but there won’t be discounts

Fair take. Its tough to be a top 20 team when classes rank in the 40s and 50s.

I like Fleck and think he does a good job, and he does put some guys in the NFL which is nice. And it remains to be seen how much the portal affects new recruits, but it is a lot easier to maintain a top 25 program with top 20-25 classes obviously.

My biggest disappointment has been the overall strength of classes the last 4-5 years. I give him a pass for the first 3-4 seasons.

At the time Jilek committed to UCF, he had offers from Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, San Diego State, Arkansas State, Ohio, Ball State and more. He also had an opportunity for Cornell.
I remember a time when people were glad we weren't recruiting against the "directional" Michigans anymore and were going after players with other P4/5 offers.

Now were back full-circle to making a thread about this kind of recruit.

This guy is the third linebacker recruited. Go take a look at the offer lists of the first two and then come back to tell us you don't know ball.

He flipped from UCF....which is in the Big 12....which is P4.

Not going to placate you with a well written response because you're trolling. Actually look at the offers from this class, Gophers won some impressive battles this cycle.

I'll even do you a favor and help you get started

Schools/programs create top 20 classes which is why the same schools do it year after year. An individual coach can maximize where a team is in whatever their ‘slot’ is, but thats about it.

This is a development program - it is what it is.
Unless we find a way to create a few 2019 seasons, or we get a deep pocket donor, this will remain a development program. It sure would be fun to have top 20 classes though, I do feel that.

Agreed. Our local recruiting footprint sucks and our NIL is average at best. We need to recruit late bloomers, etc., that the top programs ignore from their own backyards and hope some of them pan out. PJ is a developmental coach which is what we need right now.

I'll do you a favor:

UCF was Jilek's only other P4 offer.

It's ok to be realistic about Fleck's recruiting.

We're not getting much if any better until recruiting improves

Very large chance this guy doesn't do that.

I hope that we can all remember these types of postings down the road. Wonder how many times we posted negative comments about a guy who turned out to be a star? Furthermore, NIL continues to be an issue. Until that issue is resolved, Fleck's hands are somewhat tied and is doing the best he can.

Agree with everything you say. The last few classes have been quite good imo. Sure they’re 30-50 range but the difference between those is relatively small. The difference becomes exponential once you break into the top 25. There’s a good mix of highly touted recruits and solid developmental guys.

Guys like Lindsey, J. Smith, Gerald, Fame, and Hicks, just to name a few, didn’t have the most impressive offers but turned out okay.

The OT decommits from the last class were 86-88 with decent offers when they committed. Then they decommitted, blew up, became top 150 recruits, and got a bag at the money factories.

The staff does a good job. This class can still can a couple 4* and 2027 has the chance to be another considerable step up.

More than ever, the key is to find the right players for your program. Guys that buy into what you're doing. Just for reference, I looked back at the 2022 top recruiting class in the country (Texas A&M). They had 30 recruits, 19 of them are finishing their college career somewhere else. There's always going to be transfers, but if you find right fits for your program, there won't be nearly as much production leaving.

That's where I think Fleck has done well. For the most part, have been able to keep the better players while also adding quality in the portal. The portal has been a net positive for sure.

What do the offer lists of the first two have to do with this recruit? Seriously. Did they threaten to decommit or something if we brought in another LB with good offers????

It's more philosophy than ranking.

Indiana is all transfers. Could Fleck go that route? Maybe

How many guys will Indiana put into the NFL with their philosophy? Time will tell.

What will be the more sustainable model?

MN and Indiana are recruiting HS kids at the same rate/level. It will be interesting to see who gets more of their HS kids developed into B1G starters and contributors.

Indiana starts 16 Transfers and only one player that's been in college for less than 3 years.

But why even take guys like this???? Get some transfers that are a few years older.

Taking guys like this and hoping you can coach them into something is so pre-portal, pre-NIL. Get with the times, PJ.

Feel free to start the list! Ko is on it, maybe Cashman. There might be a few from the Kill/Claeys era, but when there are no 4* or 5* players around you on the team, even average people can shine.

Only Indiana, Purdue, Michigan St and UCLA landed more transfers in the Big Ten than the Gophers did last year.

That might mean something when competing for top MAC recruits. We're doing pretty well with DBs going into the NFL yet I don't see 4* and 5* recruits beating a path to our door, outside of a local kid. Most P4 programs are going to be able to coach you well enough to get a shot at the next level - it's not some advantage we have, even when it happens.

What will be the more sustainable model?

Who cares? I'll take one season like Indiana's and then possibly a bad one or two over a consistent 6-7 wins each year.

You take him because you think you can make something out of him and still have time in his career. He's a depth guy that can benefit from development. You never know what he could be in 2-3 years.

Dunno, glass half full outlook perhaps.

Bye bye, b1tch
