Go Gophers!!
This is interesting to me.Baseball could be fixed with a salary cap. If owners are willing to endure an extended lock out, like possibly an entire season, it will happen. It needs to happen. The Dodgers outspending the other 29 teams in the off-season combined is not a successful model for long term success for the sport. The NBA is growing because parity and a salary structure that is punishing for exceeding limits. NFL same thing. MLB and specifically the MN Twins situation, is beyond pathetic.
It is kind of interesting that college football is probably a bigger profit machine than the NHL and maybe MLB and until a couple years ago it was illegal for anyone to make any money
Yeah, it's definitely interesting. I sense a lock out at the end of this CBA, which I think is after next season??? I'll have to look it up, but it feels like it's on the horizon. This is interesting to me.
Because in principle I agree
But functionally MLB has more parity than the NFL
But that has more to do with the importance of the QB position than the financial structure
It was being made by coaches and staff of nonrevenue sports.Oh, there was plenty of money being made. It just wasn't being made by the players.
This is not sustainable.
Go Gophers!!
That catcher is not 5'8 170. He is 6'0 190 today, and a universal top 50 prospect in Baseball who is raking at high A ball as an 18 year old. I don't expect you or anyone else to know this, so I don't mean to sound condescending, just letting you know.Idk...on the bright side we didn't trade Joe Ryan but my gosh...we did just dump 10 players. Other than dumping salary we go sooo little in return. We got a career minor league 26 year old pitcher, with a career minor league era over 6 runs for Correa. The other guys in other trades are similar pedigree...the 12th best prospect within somebody's organization was a common description.
People calling Duran the best closer in baseball, under contract at an affordable number for a couple more seasons to the budget conscious Twins....but we get the 5th best prospect from the Phillies....a 170 pound 5'8 catcher. What the heck were we doing other than unloading as much salary as possible?
A prospective new owner...there can't be one...if there is, he is a timid soul or dumb.

I honestly know virtually nothing about European football. My 6 year old is signed up for soccer and has no coach and me, a lifelong athlete and player of multiple sports doesn't dare take it, lol. So I'm not sure how that all works there, other than they're psychotic about it, and I just recall that old Charlie Hunnam film he did before Sons of Anarchy where all the soccer clubs brawl, damn near to the death, before games.aybe it's that. Lol. Ahhh, Green Street Hooligans. Yes, that is why, hahaAs SG said, I agree with you in principle.
So I'm just wondering, what is your response to European professional soccer leagues? As far as I know, they don't have caps and a few teams dominate the spending. But they remain very popular.
Apples to oranges? I'd probably agree, just want to know your reasoning
Really nice write up, I was looking forward to reading something like your breakdown on some of the prospects from some with in-depth in the Twins. Not from someone from mlb network or some shit site like that. That catcher is not 5'8 170. He is 6'0 190 today, and a universal top 50 prospect in Baseball who is raking at high A ball as an 18 year old. I don't expect you or anyone else to know this, so I don't mean to sound condescending, just letting you know.
And since baseball is my thing, and if people are interested, I could give you an HONEST rundown of each guy. The haul was not that bad, could it have been better, yes, but don't forget you need willing partners. I would have preferred Ford from Seattle for catchers, but we also got an outstanding arm in Abel with Tait, so hard to complain. We were never getting Painter from Philly. He is a top 5 prospect, and Minnesota received the second highest prospect traded during the deadline from them in Tait, so again, not bad.
If any of the trades felt like the Pohlads were sticking their fingers directly into your eye socket and laughing, for me, it's Varland. He is a stud, from Minnesota, with 6, count em, 6 years of control left. Costs nothing, FIP under 3.00. Absolutely without question though, we got back a stud in Kendry Rojas. Rojas is in AAA, and really just needs to keep stretching out. He has filthy stuff, and sports a 7:1 k/bb ratio. Yes, he has a slider fastball combo that's ready, he needs to work his third offering into a plus pitch and most importantly, he needs innings. Id send him to AFL this season for sure. He is close.
But for me, the real sleeper is Gallagher, from the Cubs. I have friends in that organization and despite the fact you might see him as the 6-8th prospect for the Cubs, he is much more highly regarded within the organization. He is potentially, Joe Ryan (when we got him originally, not today's version)2.0, almost to a tee. He has a couple more ticks than Joe, and is equally deceptive with his delivery. His changeup is devastating, think Brad Radke/ Johan Santana. He has exceptional control, a whip around 1.00 and has blown away 100 guys in about 80 innings so far this year. As a pitcher myself, I love this guy. He is probably today, a 3-5 in a rotation in another year or so. But his arc keeps going up, he keeps adding velocity, and the Twins are very good at adding a couple mph with guys and probably more important, we are Sweeper University. If you want to learn the secrets of the Sweeper, lol, no team does it better than us. He also has a decent slider that could sharpen up a little, it's not bad by any means, but if he wants to take that Ryan leap from backend to frontline, it needs more depth and I have no doubt they know it, see it, and have a plan in place. Also, to show the depth we have on the farm, this guy is 16th in the Twins organization. That's fucking crazy to me. He is really good and at AA. Great deal for an expiring like Wili.
The trading of all those guys sucks, the Pohlads are Satan and I won't give one cent to this team until they are sold. But we are loaded with pitching and middle infield depth, have minimal long term money other than Lopez and Buxton, who are dirt cheap by the way. And this should be very appealing for the next owner. They'll have tons of prospect capital to play with and clean books, a chance to finally reset the culture within the organization, because it's broke, big time. And me personally, as much as yesterday stung, im looking forward to a clean start, top to bottom. Like the Vikings after McCombs or the Wolves now after Taylor. I'm actually excited when I really think about it. Fingers crossed for that sale.
European soccer is a different animal. Soccer is essentially the only sport in those countries (like Nebraska football situation) and with a long rich history. Soccer there is like a religion. Even 2nd and 3rd division teams draw well in England. You'll even see a few hundred people show up to watch a Sunday amateur league game.As SG said, I agree with you in principle.
So I'm just wondering, what is your response to European professional soccer leagues? As far as I know, they don't have caps and a few teams dominate the spending. But they remain very popular.

Thank you for your post. These days it seems rare to get a lot of good information in a few paragraphs. I’m not talking about our forum here, but the kind of info we used to get from sports magazines or knowledgeable local sports guys. That catcher is not 5'8 170. Correa was a huge disappointment and a big waste of money. That was a great move to deal him. Agree with you about Varland and Duran.Your post is great! You make me feel a bit better about the future of the Twins.
Trading Varland does seem to make little sense...
If either prospect becomes an All Star MLB player then maybe trading Duran is alright too but he had a couple years cheap payroll to go as a Twin. MLBdot com sees their value differently than your assessment..

5 guys were free agents to be...fine. Correa, I like a lot! But, if I was the Twins...where we are and Correa's time bomb health...I probably make that deal too.
Varland and Duran are the guys I need convincing about...because of their performance and contracts. Jax is next...did we get enough? Probably...
Factor in...many of these guys were happy to be traded and maybe we do need an attitude adjustment all around top to bottom with a new owner.
Yeah, that Varland trade was literally the Pohlads saying fuck you to Minnesota and it's fans. It made less than zero sense, if that's possible. He was pretty distraught over it, and it's the trade that set the rest of the remaining players off. I apologize for not addressing it here, rest assured I've beat that horse to death in other forums along with countless others.Your post is great! And you'll never see promotion and relegation in any major North American sport because of the vast differences between team values and facilities between major and minor league organizations.European soccer is a different animal. Even 2nd and 3rd division teams draw well in England. You'll even see a few hundred people show up to watch a Sunday amateur league game.
So parity doesn't matter because they'll just keep coming to watch the game just for the atmosphere even if their team sucks (just like Nebraska the last 10 years). You also have promotion and relegation which always gives teams hope of rising up or the drama of seeing some teams drop down.
And stadiums built with tax dollars. And you'll never see promotion and relegation in any major North American sport because of the vast differences between team values and facilities between major and minor league organizations.
Soccer is interesting because it’s totally different being in multiple counties to me.As SG said, I agree with you in principle.

I know they usually have a thing where if you sign a player that some other club has developed (in their developmental program), you owe that club some kind of fee for essentially taking away their player. Something like that. Seems like a reasonable and relevant thing for college football, may have even been brought up in another thread on here can't rememberSoccer is interesting because it’s totally different being in multiple counties to me.
A few teams dominate Spain, France, etc
But they don’t always dominate the international competitions.
I don’t know about the financials to speak about it but there are more moving parts in those leagues.
No parity nationally but some parity internationally
Yes. The transfer fee thing allows smaller teams to reap the benefits of developing great talentI know they usually have a thing where if you sign a player that some other club has developed (in their developmental program), you owe that club some kind of fee for essentially taking away their player. Point of order: I don't know Tait's weight (LOL) but I DO know he's not a "universal top 50 prospect in baseball."That catcher is not 5'8 170. Yes, I'm in my 50's and have been wanting a cap for as long as I can remember. I think baseball would see growth again if more teams were competitive, it wasn't always the same like 5 franchises spending a crap ton of money. It's what makes the NFL exciting. Yeah, in the NFL there are dynasties but for the most part they come and go. Pats had the longest run of any dynasty in the NFL in the cap era ad that lasted 15 years and now they're back near the bottom building up again. There were the 90's Cowboys too and you could argue the Chiefs are the current dynasty.Baseball could be fixed with a salary cap. If owners are willing to endure an extended lock out, like possibly an entire season, it will happen. It needs to happen. For those who aren't aware, Louie Varland is a bad ass. Homegrown from St.Paul, this guy was a late round pick, and a developmental home run that not only a smaller market team should cling to, but treat like literal gold. He touches 100 mph, has 6 years of control, which makes this deal even more insane, and if you are one of three people who are able to watch Minnesota on tv, than you know his family is at the ballpark EVERY SINGLE NIGHT!!! If ever there was a reason to leave a flaming poop bag on someone's front steps, the Pohlads have now qualified. That family is about the furthest thing you can be from being Minnesotan. They make Glenn Taylor look like Mark Walters. I genuinely despise them, not just for running the Twins like a 7/11, but the way old Carl made his fortune off the backs of the broken is even more disgusting. Anyway, that trade sucked.
Yes, MLB needs to do a lot of things and salary cap is one. The day they stopped playing most games on easily accessible TV (Like a combination of local and channels on cable that come with every cable package) is the time day the MLB started to lose fans. A lot of people watched baseball when I grew up because it was the only summer sport that you can easily access the games for. Like everyone had a TV or radio in the garage and had the game on while they were tinkering or whatever. It was something that you either sat and watched the entire game on the couch or at least had it on in the background pretty much all summer. It was easily accessible.Largely because of the bolded (bad TV coverage) and lots of bad teams, the Twins have become a non-factor for me since the 2000s. The hardcore fans follow no matter what, but I'm guessing tons of casual fans like me dropped off with lack of easy exposure.

Now you have to buy a subscription and been jerked around to several platforms. And on top of that there is no parity in the league. So if you're a smaller market team, unless there is a real magical run or something, you watch every year and hope to have a mediocre team. People get sick of paying to watch mediocre at best on TV, particularly if you make it hard to access. This is why a cap and making MLB games more accessible is huge going forward. Heck, MLB is even pretty militant about people using clips. NFL isn't. NFL says hell yeah use our clip, spread our brand everywhere for free!
Yeah, playing games faster is nice for sure. I have watched more games because of it.Yeah, the Twins not being on broadcast TV could be relegating them to niche sport status. It is what it is.
On the bright side, the pitch clock rule improved the game. MLB had become unwatchable for me after years of watching fast-paced fastpitch from my daughter's teams.
