Xavier Hires Pitino

Confident he was going somewhere. Good luck to Richard! Assuming the two guards are following him.

Read a Xavier message board. Certainly not the excitement there like at gopher hole about the respective new hires.
Kind of guardedly optimistic about Pitino.
They seem unconvinced for some reason that Dent ends up a Muskateer.

Is Xavier really that much better of a job than New Mexico? Seems like he had a pretty good gig there. Just $$, or the perception that the Big East is a better conference?

You also have to consider that NM is not part of the new Pac 12 unlike the other top MWC schools so that job gets worse than it has been with the conference getting worse.

If the Mountain West had stayed intact or New Mexico had been tapped for the PAC-Whatever rebirth, the Lobos ability to retain Pitino would have exponentially higher. Understatement.

Still perhaps not enough considering how much time Pitino has been around the Big East as well as near Cincinnati (both Lexington & Louisville).

? What

It's a better job than here. They have a future pro on their roster......

As Diehard said, the Mountain West was...was a cool conference but not so much now.
Pitino supposedly is going from $1.2 to $4.2 million per year.
Big East is a basketball conference. Xavier does not have football...all eyes and dollars are on basketball. His NIL is supposedly $8 million vs less than $3 million at New Mexico.
He's dreamed of coaching in the Big East. He gets to play his dad twice a year. He's closer to family. Much higher profile job. Hard to go to the top of the ladder from New Mexico but he can get to the SEC or Big Ten again if he takes Xavier to a couple Sweet 16;s or something.

I've read that with revenue share and no football, the Big East will be spending about $7 per years on rosters and that will be $1-2M more than power conferences with Football. Big East will be must watch if teams are put together well.

Xavier has great support from the community even with competition from UC nearby. Cool part of Cincinnati also. People love their hoops there.
