New Coach Short List

I disagree because IF the NBA is the ultimate goal for college basketball players, then you have someone who was previously there and can guide them. If it's not, then your point has merit.

Coaching in the NBA vs college are two totally different things. Saunders has NBA head coaching experience basically for the same reasons that the last two Gophers head coaches got their jobs. All 3 had little to do with their resumes.

The Minnesota homers need to stop throwing Saunders name out there. There's zero chance of him being a candidate for the job.

If they strike out on canidates like has happened here before, I could see it sadly.

Saunders has NBA coaching experience and is young with flair like PJ Fleck. That relates to players that want to get to the league. He can surround himself with good assistant coaches, but Saunders is recognizable name that kids know.
Hiring a coach with no/little experience as a college head coach for the third hire in a row would be insane. Saunders cannot be a candidate.

Saunders and Fleck are nothing alike, as far as personality is concerned.

Bryan Hodgson at Arkansas State was Nate Oates top assistant and rated the #2 recruiter in the country. Watched a few interviews, seemed like a good dude. Buffalo native, talked alot about the Bills.

This post is spot on.

Don't worry about DEI, "Minnesota Connections" or "Locking Down the Border".

Find an established basketball coach and a self promoter that gets the snowball rolling uphill again.

So you're going to be mad if the new coach isn't white or something?

I'm really hoping this isn't our game plan again.

I also can't see any similarities between Ryan Saunders and PJ. I followed the Wolves about as closely as anyone during the Ryan Saunders years and I can barely remember what he sounded like (he dressed nice). PJ, whether you like him or hate him, is distinct. Ryan Saunders is much more of a neutral personality.

No more experiments or OJT coaches. Get a proven head collegiate coach who can build and promote a program.

Similar list, but I am not as high on Odom as others. Utah State and VCU are traditionally pretty decent basketball schools. We are not. Can he take a bad program and make them good? If that is the direction we go, I would definitely be all in though!

I do agree we don't get past Niko. He has made CSU into a solid mid major from basically nothing. Also if he makes the tourney this year (and I think they win enough in the MW Tourney to make it) that is the tourney in 3 out of 4 years.
Niko Medved has done well at CSU, but he didn't build them from nothing. Tim Miles got them on the right track, and then Larry Eustachy had a decent run there also. I think he's done a really good job this year, after losing some talent to the portal. Especially Nique Clifford has improved under Niko.

Hope it's not Medved. That would be a dud.
Generally teams hire the opposite of what they had before. Pitino had personality but wasn't one of us. Ben was one of us but didn't have the personality to sell the program. I think Coyle goes splashy this time, if he has the money.

Saunders is a nice guy with a nice name and no personality. He could barely complete a sentence. He has no recruiting or transfer connections. He was in way over his head as an NBA HC and would be equally over his head as the gophers HC.

A little off topic but can someone refresh my memory what commitments we having coming in next year? Also I for one hope Isaac Asuma sticks around. I really like his game.
