ESPN's Jeff Borzello: "As of time of publish, it seems Ben Johnson is likely to get another year at Minnesota."

Nope. She loves the U and didn’t talk about it for a long time. When she did she explained she was asked by Coyle to attend a press conference but that he had not discussed the reason for the conference until they were walking to the room. She chose to not attend or comment when he finally told her she was going to be offered a consulting position but would not be retained as the head coach.
Wow. I don't follow the women's team at all but that is low by Coyle.

Mark Coyle makes $1.4 goddamn million per year. It's about time he earns it by showing some balls and firing the worst coach in the history of University of Minnesota athletics, and I want it done, in the words of Warden Norton of Shawshank Prison:

What about this (conspiracy) theory?

Coyle's already got an in on another AD job somewhere, so he'll just keep Ben around knowing he's not going to be around for the fifth season of greatness. Just a thought.

Who the hell wants a do-nothing ditherer with literally zero accomplishments at his current stop and a cost of a million and a half a year? The university president who pulls that trigger should then turn the gun on themselves.

It did not fare too well for Warden Norton despite his demand.

Coyle is just another in a long line of ineptitude in our A.D. office. He’s a little bit special because he can barely speak English.Hell, Goetz was probably the best A.D. we’ve had in my time as a fan. When I first moved up to the Twin Cities way back in the day after college didn’t have two nickels to rub together I scraped up enough cash for hoops season tickets each year in my 20’s and man when they arrived in the mail they were like gold. Now, I can maybe name three of the players — it’s unbelievable really.

Kudos to folks that are still watching the games. Admittedly I only watched one game this year and it really was only the second half -Rutgers.

An entertaining game that we couldn’t pull out on the road against another bottom barrel team. Ok for a first year, unacceptable at this point for a program from the most profitable league in the country.

The only downside of letting Ben go is money, which at this point I could argue we would actuallly lose more by keeping him.

No chance this team performs better next year, this was a down year for the big and we still couldn’t finish in the middle.

If Coyle doesn’t make a move he is signaling that he no longer considers basketball an important piece to the university athletics program.

She knew what the press conference was about and had an understandable change of heart at the last minute and decided not to attend.

Looking at the roster, Betts, Frank Mitchell, Grayson Grove and Asuma will be the only returnees. Then add in three freshman who based on their rankings and other offers likely won't be big-time contributors out of the gate. That leaves up to 6 spots up in the air.
...
I agree with your comment but do have one question on the scholarships: My understanding is the settlement opt-in schools will have a scholarship/roster limit of 15 next year. Assuming we utilize them, we would have 8 available (assuming the seven returnees/incoming recruits mentioned). Is it known if we intend to go up to 15 scholarships?

If you do, you fill the last with a couple of local developmental players.

We need practice players

This is going to take a stupid and futile gesture on someone’s part.

And we’re just the team to do it!

I just don't see how this is the case. Next year will almost definitely be worse than this year....unless Coyle has confirmation of some big time NIL coming in. Otherwise....what are you going to sell? Another rebuild? Considering how the first build went? I don't know.....just don't see it.

Been saying this for a month. Hes getting year 5.

All the morons (looking at you NYC, MNVC, Johnneyboy) peacocking over a meaningless W in LA should e happy.
Turns out they weren't meaningless at all...

No one wants an AD like Mark in this day and age.

Truly surprising that, among both his basketball hires, Coyle would give Johnson more rope than Whalen, who outperformed him.
From a sports perspective it may be surprising, but it's not surprising at all if you're connected to the world of academia.

How can Coyle bring Ben back just based on this information below - I did an AI comparison of Lindsey and Ben - seems to me to be an open and shut case of bringing him back or not!! Lindsey's record was better than Bens... probably doesn't even count the loss today!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Compare university of minnesota basketball coaching records and big ten records of lindsey whalen and Ben Johnson

Sure thing! Here's a comparison of the coaching records and Big Ten records of Lindsey Whalen and Ben Johnson at the University of Minnesota:

Lindsey Whalen

  • Tenure: 2018-2023
  • Overall Record: 71-76 (.483)
  • Big Ten Record: 32-58 (.356)
  • NCAA Tournament Appearances: 0
  • WNIT Appearances: 2 (2018-19, 2021-22)
  • Notable Achievements: Coached one WNBA draft pick, one All-American, and 11 All-Big Ten honorees.

Ben Johnson

  • Tenure: 2021-present
  • Overall Record: 56-70 (.444)
  • Big Ten Record: 22-57 (.278)
  • NCAA Tournament Appearances: 0
  • NIT Appearances: 1 (2023)
  • Notable Achievements: Signed back-to-back top 100 recruits, led the team to a significant turnaround win season from 2022-23 to 2023-24.
Both coaches have had their challenges and successes, contributing to the development of the basketball programs at the University of Minnesota in their unique ways. If you have any specific aspects you'd like to dive deeper into, let me know!

I really don't see how Johnson can be retained unless Coyle truly thinks he is an adequate coach and the overwhelming issue is a lack of NIL dollars...and is convinced allocating a significant percentage of revenue sharing dollars (20-25%) will make an immediate impact. 🤷‍♂️

I think only Coyle knows if Ben will get another year. By all metrics he does not deserve another one. I do think the local media banging the Ben drum is something he is stirring up with them or they are doing for clicks.

75% confidence that Ben is fired within the next week. Whalen is more of a legend. Had a better record. Had better recruits and we still made a move. Coyle will do the right thing.

Ben: 56-70 (.444), 22-57 (.278)
Lindsay: 71-76 (.483), 32-58 (.356)
Apologies for duplicating the work done here... didn't see this but agree with everything he says as to me this is proof he will NOT be bringing Ben back.. If he does, then we have more politics involved which did get him the job I think in the first place so very plausible to happen again!

Poor coach, average to poor recruiter, total stiff at generating interest (and NIL $) in the program....4 years of this is enough!!

Meanwhile, Iowa will oust Fran after one bad year and bring in some rock star like McCollum.
The universe will now will this into existence
