***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT RUTGERS IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Back on the road, back in our happy place. Two 7-12 squads battling it out in advance of the BTT.

A big decision just days away, every win helps Johnson’s case.

8 BT wins is better than 7.

GET ‘ER DONE JOHNSON!!!!!!!!!
Gut' er not. Got bit by the OT juggernaut.

Tubby could have done the job with a little support on the Royce White issue. He doesn't get run off for what he did at most D1 schools. With Royce, he would have had a couple of really good teams. Then...he seemed to lose the zeal to get it done anymore here and became a grumpy old coach. Ran off Joseph and Cobb and lacked a good PG for a couple of years.
I think you are giving to much credit to Royce. He had alot of issues. I think Fred Hoiberg would agree. I don't think he could even hop on a plane for awhile. Never was much good at college ball.

I only watched his NCAA games with Iowa State in which he was amazing. But that year he averaged 13.4 pts, 5 assists and 9 boards - really his only year of college buckets. Pretty darn good. He went off the rails in the NBA with the no fly situation.

He had one good year then went to the NBA and washed out very quickly (partially because of his air travel phobia).

Agree. White is 2 french fries short of a Happy Meal. What an odd duck. And then he tried unsuccessfully to run for a couple of governmental seats in Minnesota.

Didn’t watch postgame but did anyone ask BJ why he didn’t play Mitchell in OT

Took the bus with John Madden.

I understood your point about the draft pick analogy. Is one (1) relatively meaningless game worth more than the future overall health of the program? Not to me.

I'm cheering for the Gophers but any scenario that may result in another season with Ben is far more devastating than a singular loss IMO. I don't have to trade in my Gopher "fan card" for attempting to look at the bigger picture.

Thanks for the response Slim Tubby.

It's an awkward position to be in as a fan. I understand the viewpoints on both sides. Maybe it's not a perfect analogy to the professional game. But the worst case scenario was always landing in a place far from postseason consideration but good enough to avoid a truly disastrous season and thereby give the AD pause. Does 7-13 fall in that range? I guess we'll find out soon.

Yep, a .350 conference winning percentage might turn out to be enough of an improvement over the previous three years that it saves his job. Hard to believe when you put it that way, but that's where we are.

Right or wrong that team was gutted, at many schools they would have played, not only White but Mbwake. The talent would have been there for a deep run in the tournament.

Wow. That was the worst officiating I have seen this year- very lopsided against us- that was one of at least 4 brutal calls or non calls that went against us. That game was ours.
Shoulda made our free throws and it isn't a concern... but then again... we haven't been a good f.t. squad since Ben has been here

Yep. We haven't hit 70% the last three years. Crazy bad.
On this current team there are 5 decent free throw shooters - Garcia, Patterson, M. Mitchell, Rigsby, and Asuma (although he was weakest of the bunch and below 70% which is surprising for a PG). The other 4 were all in the 70s, not great but not terrible.

But then holy crap - Odukale, Fox, F. Mitchell, Edmonds, and Betts combined to go 91 for 190 from the line which comes out to roughly 48%. That is just shockingly bad for D1 level basketball players.

Interesting side note from going through the stats. Frank Mitchell finished the regular season with 66 offensive boards and 63 defensive. I would bet it is very rare for a player to finish with more offensive rebounds than defensive rebounds. For most players it is a pretty solid split the other way.

Fox for example was 32 OFF 46 DEF and Garcia's number was over 3:1 in terms of defensive boards over offensive boards.
