It goes deeper than pro sports. Pro sports is not the problem. The problem comes from within. One must accept, recognize, admit, acknowledge a problem before one seeks help for said problem. The blame game only works in elevators when passing gas. Odd FCS schools NDSU SDSU N.Iowa have better active loyal fan bases.
When competing for fans having multiple pro sports definitely is a part of the problem. Your other examples are also in states with 0 pro sports teams .

To be fair I bet if Washington had our last 50+ years of on field results their fan base would look and feel very similar to ours.
Washington went to 6 Rose Bowls in the late 70's through early 90's and won a NC in 1991. Other than a stretch in the early 2000's, they've been pretty consistently much better than the Gophers program. They've never been second fiddle to any of the pro teams there.
