Kill on Fleck: Coach has done a good job. There’s no doubt about that. MN has won. My personal feelings—one way or another—coach has done a good job.

PJ is kicking ass about 352 days a year. It’s game day the past year for sure and arguably back to ‘20 where he hasn’t. He gets his shit together on these days and we really have something. If not, none of the other stuff matters a lick.

as I recall - and I don't think this started with Kill - the allegation or suggestion was that Fleck and Heather may have been involved while they were each married to their first spouses. the public record indicates that both original marriages ended in divorce and that Fleck and Heather were married within the next year.

look - there's no question that Kill is thin-skinned. but from Kill's perspective, Kill feels that he tried to help Fleck's career when Fleck was a young coach. then Fleck takes over at MN and makes a big deal about "changing the culture." Kill took that as a personal attack - meaning that there was something wrong with the culture Kill and Claeys established. so Kill - apparently - was trying to suggest that Fleck talks about 'culture' but Fleck was not perfect either.

at least that's how I remember it.

98% of coaches in their opening press conference make some reference to changing culture, or some variation of the term. For Jerry to act like that was a direct personal insult is very Jerry Kill-like.

I politely disagree. Every coach has his/her style and some preferred Kill and some prefer Fleck. I find them both grating in different ways but then I realize they are football coaches and neither are rocket scientists nor people whose jobs decide the fate of the Western World.

I'm an old man and I grew up rural and Kill reminds me of some of human bantam roosters on the mail route who would "blah, blah, blah" all the time and wear out everyone's ears. The used to call former Los Angeles Tommy LaSorda "Walking Eagle" in the sense that he was so full of sh*t that he couldn't fly and I always viewed Kill the same way. Fleck has a different style and there are days I feel the same way about him. But Kill had a schtick and I don't see him as being any more genuine than Fleck.

PJ's shtick can get old when the team isn't doing well. But I'd rather have him leading the program than the Colorado carnival barker Deion Sanders. The way the egomaniacal Sanders ran off players at Colorado was sickening. Seems like barker Tim Brewster couldn't even take it as he left Boulder to go to Charlotte.
 

I would say many of the guys that were drafted were recruited with Kill. The safety for TB, Cash, the EP kid.
 




I'm just glad that Kill is coming to his senses now where he has stopped bashing Fleck etc. However I do feel bad that I believe his antics destroyed his marriage with Rebecca whom I admired as a great wife and mother to his family.

Like a family member they each have their endearing quirks, strengths, weaknesses. And, neither really gives a rip what we say about them.

No chance you can give Winfield credit for Kill. Yes, Jerry Kill recruited Antoione Winfield (not sure if he actually played for him or just Clayes), but after his name was brought up in the sexual assault despite not even being in the apartment that it took place in Winfield Sr said his son would never play for the U again. This was said after a good football season where his transfer options would be plentiful. Fleck had to re-recruit him, probably harder than he was recruited the first time, because of the bad blood that was there.

Give Kill credit for Cashman. Cashman was clearly better than Kill even thought, because he wasn't offered a scholarship.

I am pretty sure either one of us could have recruited Carter Coughlin to the U - he was destined to be a Gopher due to his family ties.

If I had to guess some opinions matter more to him than others. Probably not so much mine or yours.

I look at it like this: Jerry has built a career (and a good one) as the working class hero underdog building competitive teams via development, hard scrabble work ethic, and an eye for coachable talent (outside of Chris Streveler). Disrespect is rocket fuel for individuals like Jerry. Sure, he probably cares about what other coaches think, some in media and yes he’s become a little bit of a parody of himself carrying that enormous disrespect chip around all the time but that’s how he succeeded. The humble brag stuff, prideful stuff is part of the bit. I can’t name a coach that doesn’t have some quirks that are going to irritate at least some people.

Ferdinand Magellan was killed on Mactan Island in the Philippines on April 27, 1521, and never made it back to Spain. His ghost still haunts us.
 

I think this ‘rivalry’ is hilarious because:
1 - Fleck has a lot of respect for Kill as a coach and went out of his way to say so in his introductory press conference at Minnesota
2 - Kill’s not completely wrong to be a little salty over the fact that Fleck got to work with new facilities. Kill gets credit for helping build those facilities and he undoubtedly left Minnesota’s football program in a better state than he found it.
3 - Kill is clearly doing this for attention.
4 - Fleck seems not to care in the least anymore so it doesn’t hurt anyone.
