2023-2024 College Basketball Coaches Hired/Fired Thread

Clem didn't have any NCAA wins when he was hired, but he was clearly an excellent candidate that we were lucky to have a shot at hiring.
We aren't, never were, and never will be even remotely approaching Kentucky. This hire is embarrassing for them. This is worse than us hiring Ben Johnson.

That's not to say that it can't or won't work out, as stranger things have happened, but on paper this is a disaster.

The question was how Minnesota fans would react to hiring a coach without any NCAA wins.

I have a hard time believing you’re going to be successful in your new job when you can’t quit your old job. This one’s gonna be a shit show.
Interestingly enough, maybe moonlighting is the future of coaching, since you’re most valuable recruiting is done in 30-45 days after the season ends. No need to be burning the midnight oil developing relationships with freshmen in high school. Take on a second job in radio where you can do it with a cell phone and a decent connection no matter where you are. 🤔

Didn’t we try a version of this when Lindsay tried coaching and playing at the same time?

She finished her last season with the Lynx right before her first year with the Gophers started, but that's it.

Dawn Staley did it for several years.

Four months behind can’t help. Staley is in a world by herself and probably had head coach quality assistants to cover for her absences.

I’ll take disaster and the points.
OTOH, it's UWGB and the Horizon League. A) There's not that far to fall. B) The profile and awareness of the program will be raised. I think it's kinda worth a shot because who cares if it fails?

If it succeeds he'll be out of there ASAP.

As was Wicks. It's a stepping stone job and always will be.

ETA: Define success - Gottlieb might want this level of job and the radio job to continue. At a P5 level, that might be less likely.

You may be right on UWGB, but the one and only reason Sundance left is because WYO's fool coach took the chickenshit route and left for an assistant job elsewhere. He created a complete shitshow, recognized what he'd done, and checked out through the window. Here's hoping SW can do something with a once pretty good program.

Given your username, can I assume that you are a WYO guy in some way? I don't follow them anymore, but still have family in Laramie.

I think the portal is really tricky for conferences like the MWC - a couple of schools have had some success (notably the Aztecs), but the best players and coaches tend to move to greener pastures at the first opportunity. My sense is that Wyoming was ravaged by the portal, with Ike going to Gonzaga. Tough gig for any coach. I think Wicks knows this and is obviously familiar with the program. He had a good year at UWGB. Others will come calling if he turns the Pokes around. Maybe MN.

They tied for third in an 11/12 team league last year...so maintaining might be difficult.

I don't think there is a difference in the jobs. How much time a coach spends I think is more the coach than the job. DI head coach is pretty much consumed 24/7 if he's all in. Why would you hire him? Why would you allow him to continue his radio show?
He is certainly not a proven commodity. Doing the job part time is silly.

That's a good point (bolded). However, I think the scrutiny is a lot higher in the P5 level, and probably also the time spent with public appearances and the media. Your extra time is just less.

As to why hire him, it's certainly unorthodox, but again, this is UWGB and the Horizon League. Why not try something weird? The worst that can happen is that it doesn't work out and you go get someone else in a couple years.

Coyle gives a thumbs up to your last sentence.
