Flip Dixon to the Portal :-(

Any reason? Honestly curious
He is from Georgia, might want to get back closer to home. That would be my guess for why the poster would have picked those two schools in particular.

Does anyone know if players considering the portal talk with the coaches to gauge how the staff thinks they’ll be used next year? Or do the players just announce they’ll be entering the portal. It probably happens both ways, but Flip Dixon is such a head scratcher that it makes me wonder.

Hopefully Fleck can help him find NIL money and resell the Gophers to him.

It's possible the staff told him they wanted to keep using him in the hybrid role he played this year and he wanted to play pure safety.

Fleck has said he has conversations with every player after the season. But you would be correct on saying it happens both ways, input from the coaches or players doing it on their own.

on another thread, there's video of Fleck's press conference following the Bowl announcement.

someone asked a question about players leaving via the portal. couldn't hear the question, but I think it was about Dixon.

Fleck's answer is interesting. He mentioned that sometimes one decision is based on another decision. He brought up Nubin's announcement about returning, and seemed to imply or suggest that it influenced Dixon. Fleck also brought up last year. Mo announces he was returning and Bucky and Ky enter the portal - also seemingly suggesting a connection.

BTW, if I heard correctly, Fleck said that Nubin would be able to play in the bowl game, so the hand injury must have been relatively minor.

Thomas and Irving last year were obviously heavily influenced by Ibrahim coming back.

I believe the staff has 1:1 meetings when / near the end of the regular season.

No way to control that though so just have to assume it's part of the new system.
Correct. It's a business and if you want players, you better have the money to pay up.

Oh I guess he did. Didn't realize, thought he would've had more appearances this year if he had.
Nevermind then...
According to his Gopher Sports bio, he has played in all 12 games this year.

He's not a backup safety, he played a ton here and was really good. He is a 200+ guy who can tackle and cover in the slot. He was a really big part of one of the best defenses in the country.
I realize that who they provide to the networks isn't always who is on the field for the first play of the game, but more often than not the TV broadcast included Dixon as a starter, they only "started" two LBs (at least as best as I can recall).

Maybe Ga Tech. I was a big Flip Dixon fan, but UGA has Flip Dixon types on their scout team

Man! I got a video message from Flip with my Dinkytown Athletes membership. Not as cool now that he's leaving.

Dixon’s best chance to really shine was in Nubin’s spot. The safety positions aren’t interchangeable and as the third safety he wasn’t on the field every down. To showcase himself I get this one but we will be hard pressed to have a transfer that hurts our on field product as much as this one.
