To my eyes, this team does not lack talent – it lacks identity. Bear with me, if you care to.
In previous years, if you really thought about our running attack, the path to a dominant running attack looked like this: (i) rush in vain up the middle for about a quarter-and-a-half; and then (ii)...
Regarding the defense...
I have not re-watched the game, but -- that said -- my impression while watching live was that after Rutger's fast start, we concluded that we could not stop their receivers (they have three future NFL receivers on their squad). If you can't stop their receivers, then...
I hasten to add to my previous observation that: (i) this sort of lack of coordination so early in the season is commonplace, especially when Johnson spent last year playing center; (ii) I thought Johnson looked pretty darn good out there from an all-in perspective; and (iii) I was THRILLED to...
I mentioned this in another thread, but from a topical perspective my observation should be here.
I noticed an OL screw up on a particular play in which Lindsey was sacked.
The DE took a hard inside rush to "draw" Roy inside with him, and meanwhile the DT made initial contact with Johnson...
Regarding the O-line...
On the sack of Lindsey, the DT stunted around the end and the DE took a hard inside rush. Roy responded correctly: (i) punched the DE inside to Johnson; and (ii) dove out to meet the stunting DT. But Johnson messed up: he stayed engaged with the DT, when he should have...
One more thing...
Anyone notice that Nathan Roy was playing at left tackle? He looked real good. I'm all for locking that spot down with Roy and going into next year with that position under control.
That's the best looking freshman QB I've seen in a long time.
If you don't call that performance an A-performance, then you have unrealistic expectations of a freshman.
This year might be special, but it's hard to put together so many new pieces in a single year. ...But Drake, Javon, and...
I basically agree.
To add "nuance," I'll chime in to say that Daniel Jackson *does* get separation -- just not sustained separation.
He gets separation from getting efficiently into and out of cuts. But then the separation is closed, because he is slow when running in a straight line...
