Because Maryland beat Kentucky (Q1 win) and Princeton (Q2 win) and Michigan State beat Ole Miss (Q1) and Clemson (Q2) but Gophers lost their Q1 and Q2 non conference games.

The Gophers are held back a bit because most of the top teams had a better non-conference than the Gophers (they needed to beat Kansas and/or Alabama).
