It's fun to play, and beat, west coast teams but not playing Iowa/Wisconsin twice every year really takes away from the rivalry, imo.

The number of teams will certainly increase in the future, while having a guaranteed number of spots for each power conference. I imagine it will continue to be chosen by a committee.
