If football is running at a $54 million profit and athletics in total is running at a $2 million profit, that means football is subsidizing over $50 million in losses from the other sports.
Lack of money shouldn't be an excuse for not having a good enough coaching staff or roster to compete...
Chernoff's page says he "oversees all off-field aspects of the Minnesota football program" which implies he manages salaries and contracts.
If he's paid $400k a year which is top 25 in CFB, I would hope he's managing more than facilities and support staff.
The Vikings OL has been poor and held back the Vikings for 5+ years across many different QBs. Max wouldn't look good in the NFL in any setting but he would certainly look better with time to throw, although if the OL was better maybe JJ doesn't get hurt and Max never plays.
He looked really good some games but also had a bunch of games where he didn't do much - 6 of 13 games with 15 or fewer receiving yards. If he can become more consistent he could be a big contributor.
Both are huge to have coming back next year. The challenge will be having enough depth at DB - all it takes is 1 guy out of 4-5 in the secondary to not be good enough and the offense will pick on him all day. In the Northwestern game and the 3 blowout losses, it felt like there were 1 or 2 DBs...
And if you hire someone who has more than a year of experience coaching a MAC team that was terrible at the position, you'll have a good idea of how good of a coach they are.
If he can coach RBs to play like him then it's a home run hire but there are a lot of good players who make bad coaches and bad players who make good coaches.
Mo coached elsewhere last year but if it wasn't for his playing career, I think a lot of people would be questioning why we hired someone with 1 year of experience coaching the second worst run offense in the MAC. The run game isn't all on the RBs and performance isn't all on the coaches but I...
If he can stay healthy, keeping Taylor, Drake, and Anthony Smith and only losing Koi out of the top tier of names is about the best we could have reasonably expected.
I don't love hiring alumni or guys with previous ties to Fleck or the program because it's easy to overlook their flaws when you're rooting for them. Fruechte seems to have solid experience though and seems like he'd be a decent hire even if he had no previous affiliation or any reason to like him.
We don't have visibility to contracts like in pro sports but this feels a bit like the Vikings letting Cousins go - good player you'd like to have around but expensive, there are other decent and more affordable options, and there are other positions where the money would do more good. He also...
I would be happy to become a serious championship contender while losing some of the positive off the field reputation the Gophers have build. I wouldn't want the Gophers to recruit players with major behavioral issues or keep players after major incidents but would be okay with them recruiting...
