Part of the reason for the lack of National Titles during that time is that the B1G was unfairly penalized during that era by being tied to the Rose Bowl. Either the B1G champ or the Pac-10 champ was usually somewhat weak, and the national media wanted a de-facto title game.

I've often thought the team that would have best benefitted from a wild card was the 1988 Twins. That team won 91 games and was one of the best Twins teams ever. Unfortunately they shared a division with the peak Bash Brothers A's.

I've tried to explain this to people for years who claim "It's a pro sports town." That's but part of the equation. There is only x amount of discretionary money to spend and it's spread around.

And the inability or unwillingness to cover things up is probably a big reason the revenue sports at the U haven't won squat in decades.
