I said it when the whole NIL thing first came about. These are donors that aren't wealthy enough to buy a pro team (few people are) but the next best thing is trying to buy a championship for their favorite college team.

You could make a legitimate case for not having divisions at all for individual sports. If someone is the best in the country at the 100 meters, who cares if they run for USC or Upper Iowa?

Yeah, the Big East is absolutely a power conference as far as basketball is concerned. Xavier is a major upgrade from UNM. Not that UNM is a bad job by any means - they're generally a good mid major program.
I question why the Big East would choose UST over say, Bradley, Drake, Dayton, Valpo or any number of longer established D1 hoops programs. I'm honestly surprised they took Creighton considering what a geographic outlier they are.

Undergrad is almost the same for the two schools. Denver has twice the post grad students though. (which honestly surprises me since UST has so many grad programs.)
They're a wealthy private school whose fan base is primarily local and who donate to and support their alma mater. They won't out draw the Gophers, but they'll draw a lot.
And you can't compare basketball and hockey. I've said it many times, college hockey is a niche sport. People here don't...
