All Things Alex Illikainen Recruitment Thread: UPDATED 11/12/18: Illikainen leaves UW

Actually what they do is say you are so far down the depth chart that if you want to play, I will help you find a school where you will be a starter and you can transfer. They don't just boot them out unless the coach isn't a good guy.

In regards to Pitino finding a place for Gaston this year…why do that? He didn't know he wouldn't be admitted until quite late and he hasn't had Alex commit yet. If one or the other of Alex/Jarvis don't commit, it's a non-issue. We will see how it unfolds...

I think ultimately we end up with 5 new recruits next year, I just don't see Pitino signing 5 this fall.

Unclear if the commitment of this PF would eliminate one option for Alex or not, but thought I would post.

Never considered them much of a threat but every little big helps.

So do most think it's basically down to WI or MN?

I'd say Iowa is still in the mix too...regardless of which of his final three he chooses, it looks like we'll be seeing a lot of him in the B1G. I just hope it's cheering for him in the maroon and gold instead of despising him on either Wisconsin or Iowa.

Here is my 2 cents on Alex. (assuming JJ commits tomorrow and Pitino still wants him)

Jarvis committing is huge. It shows that committing to the local school is "cool" again. Now that Jarvis is a gopher does Alex really want to be the bad guy and commit to Wisconsin? I doubt it. Pitino and co. at Minnesota is now a cool place to play again. The results and playing style speak for themselves in just one year. Jarvis committing blazes the trail. With Jarvis in Alex's ear, I fully expect Alex to follow suit and be a gopher (again, assuming Pitino isn't done for 2015)

Theory

I started to think if any of our recruits who wanted to be here extremely bad, would choose to be a preferred walk-on. It would work out well to walk-on until a scholarship opens up (Gaston/transfer).

Can we all just appreciate the situation we are in? A couple years ago we were scrambling to fill our roster with the mavs and chips of the world, now we are fighting over who will get kicked off because we might have TOO MANY good people? I just can't appreciate enough how much Rich has done for the program already.

Alex is the perfect recruit to finish this class. With that said, I would shoot for the moon if there is a spot available.

It would really piss me off if Alex goes to Wisconsin, especially because they offered him just 3 weeks ago while Pitino and staff have been going hard after him since the day they first stepped on campus.

This. I know it's been documented that Alex has been dating them for awhile, but man....

Alex. You. Are. Their. Back-up. Plan.

When is the last time we didn't have at least one player transfer? That said, I don't see Richard over-signing, even for AI. Certainly the decision to not sit on one of the scholarships this year is now questionable. But it's a good problem to have.

It's great to have this kind of a problem, I just hope there is a reasonable and fair solution.

Looks like Alex will either be a Gopher or with 1 of our 2 biggest rivals.

Probably Buggs becomes a Graduate Transfer to somewhere. This is his senior year academically.

Thats an interesting point. I didn't know or think about that and no one is getting screwed in that instance.

He's a red shirt sophomore, how is this his senior year academically? This is his third year of school.

I think Alex will be a Hawkeye. With no insider information, I'll just make a monumental leap based on a t-shirt in a recent Twitter photo. Because that's how I roll.

I'd rather he go to Iowa than Wisconsin, but that would still be a pretty hard pill to swallow.
