More details on the Hockey City Classic...
The University of Minnesota will host the 2014 Hockey City Classic Jan. 17 at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Intersport announced. The outdoor college hockey doubleheader will kick off with the Gopher women’s hockey program taking on Minnesota State at 4:30 p.m. CT followed by the Gopher men’s hockey program hosting Ohio State at 8 p.m.
“The Hockey City Classic at TCF Bank Stadium will be a special event for the entire state of Minnesota,” University of Minnesota Director of Athletics Norwood Teague said. “Outdoor hockey is a prominent fixture of Minnesota culture and we know that partnering with Intersport for this event will guarantee an unbelievable experience for everyone involved.”
Tickets for the 2014 Hockey City Classic start at $15, are valid for both games and will go on sale to the general public Oct. 22 at www.mygophersports.com or by calling 612-624-8080. The Hockey City Classic is included as part of the Minnesota season ticket package; season ticket holders will be notified by mid-September regarding seat locations and upgrade opportunities. Select stakeholders from the three participating universities will have the opportunity to purchase advance tickets in an exclusive presale. Once the presale information is finalized, each university will communicate with their respective groups. Requests for group orders of 20 or more tickets are currently being accepted at hockeycityclassic.com and will be filled prior to Oct. 22.
The Hockey City Classic will be part of a Winter Festival, which will consist of a variety of events, including youth, high school and adult hockey events, private ice rentals, a public skate and much more.
The Hockey City Classic is being organized by Chicago-based sports and entertainment marketing agency Intersport in partnership with the University of Minnesota. Last year, more than 52,000 fans filled Soldier Field in Chicago for the inaugural Hockey City Classic, which featured four Top 20 programs: Notre Dame vs. Miami University and Minnesota vs. Wisconsin. A rousing success, the Hockey City Classic Winter Festival entertained more than 100,000 people at 80 events during the 18-day event and brought outdoor hockey to Solider Field for the first time in the venue’s legendary history.
“Last year’s Hockey City Classic was an incredible success,” Drew Russell, Vice President of Owned Properties at Intersport, said. “It provided the city of Chicago with an extremely unique event, which entertained more than 100,000 people and showcased some of the best hockey programs in the country. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Minnesota this year and bring the Hockey City Classic to Minneapolis-St. Paul – a market that cherishes hockey and a state whose culture is indelibly connected to the game. This multi-faceted event is rich with family-friendly opportunities for the local community to get on the ice, as well as a priceless opportunity to witness the first outdoor hockey game for Minnesota in more than eight decades.”
