Why did Macura shun the Gophers?

I remeber JP being quoted here as saying something to the effect that he would love to be the first commit for the gophers 2014 class

Gopher Hole: No one has committed to Minnesota yet because of the new coaching staff and players wanting to make visits. What would it mean to you if you decided to be the first player to commit to Minnesota?

J.P. Macura: I think that it would mean a lot. I think that it would mean that I was the first one to trust their coaching staff. That would mean a lot of them, too.

This is the quote that generated all the response. May have been one other quote in a different thread too. He never said anything about committing. "mean a lot" is far different than "going to be".

That is not important in this day and age, Ray.

Not true. The Catholic schools have a great appeal to a young Catholic person. It makes a big difference in a lot of people's school choices.

My vote is for A and D. Never underestimate the impact of stringing a kid along for a while. Macura had to wait a long time while Pitino courted others before he was given an offer. I'm sure this played a role in his decision, and can't blame him for it.

That is not important in this day and age, Ray. Besides, whether he is or not is none of our business.

What are you talking about? It is relevant if he wants to go to a Catholic school.

Guys, all I referred to that imo it doesn't matter, and imo it shouldn't matter to anyone else. Sorry if I get to have an opinion.

Yeah! At Minnesota we gotta stay rigorous in our PC approach to everything!

I love me some good recruiting intrigue.... Also, I think we need the change the title of the thread! :)

Pitino and Young visiting him tomorrow. Wouldn't expect a commitment tomorrow though, but maybe after they schedule an official visit. We can hope at least.

Really need to come out of tomorrow's visit with an Official Visit lined up...

Of course Jerry Meyer is going to say that, it doesn't look good on his site when 11 "experts" all get it wrong and there is plenty of competition to get news and updates. With that being said I would love to be wrong and hope it's because we are going to land Whitehead, but I'll take Meyer's words with a grain of salt.

The plot thickens.

Whitehead's friend, Newton, had no issue committing without an official.

Wasn't Whitehead in Minnesota for an AAU event at one point as well though? Could be wrong on that.

Yeah he was. Not sure if he visited campus though. I would love to be wrong about him committing at the home visit.

So, if true, we lost out on Macura due to the staff's hope that they could get Whitehead? I don't buy that for a second. Meyer just grasping at straws.

I know you like to defend the Gophers and Pitino from all criticism/questioning, even when it's warranted, but now I think you're just paranoid. How on earth was this your response to the thread? There is no Pitino bashing here.

I always thought the Pitino bashing would at least wait to start after the first loss - and yet here we are in September. Even I'm surprised by this one Gopherhole.

Apologize if it came across as commenting on this whole thread, for the most part it is all good.

Just a few "the sky is falling" "I've given up on Pitino" "The master recruiter comes through again" "how do you miss out on the 4th best in state prospect?" "Pitino will ever win here!" Etc. people already losing any hope because a recruit didn't select Minnesota.

Comments from various threads as well, not just this one.

That's what I have an issue with. Speculating why Macura chose else where works for me!

Who are the paranoid ones? It sure as hell ain't scher!!!

if Pitino told a 4 star, top 100 recruit we don't need him without any commits yet, let me say this first. Who the f*ck does Pitino think he is? lol

I don't buy this at all

Whitehead did not play in the EYBL event with the New Jersey Playaz as he was in Dallas that weekend with the Juice All-Stars

Creighton and Xavier had visited Macura yesterday. I don't believe that Jerry Meyer bit at all. I think Creighton was the clear second choice. I think the school size was a very big factor. A Xavier education is around 200,000 grand. I also think that the fact that basketball is the main thing at Xavier, Creighton and Butler is a big thing as well.

That's a bush league response worthy of a Badger fan. We cooled on him, yeah....

I'll believe it when Whitehead and Vaughn are on the roster in 2014.
