News on Shaka Smart

No extension has been reached yet by VCU and Shaka. Shaka basically told them today he has a list of demands which need to be met for him to stay. As I previously note he would prefer to stay at VCU. IF VCU can't meet his demands then whe will be out the door. If an extension is not offically announced by this time tomorrow then the likely hood of him going to Minnesota or UCLA sometime next week becomes far greater.

Thanks again for the info. What kinds of demands are we talking about here? Are they program related, compensation/perk related or both?

Taking everything in from GH and Twitter, my guess is Teague has made his pitch and offer to Shaka and now Shaka has taken it back to VCU and said, "This is what I have, match it or I am going to walk." And of course VCU immediately says, we'll match it, but now they have to figure out HOW they will match it.

Well the demands for VCU may certainly not be the same as Minnesota but a lot of it has to do with the facilities around VCU and for his assistant coaches. He also wants assurance his AD will work to get them in the new Big East conference.

Maybe Minnesota boosters will get out their checkbooks for a practice facility in fear that we're about to lose our chance at Shaka.

Just a reminder, folks, unlike Ryan, I didn't say Shaka was coming here. I said that people at another program who had contacted him to gauge his interested had been told he was going here. Now, it may turn out that Shaka goes elsewhere, but I still believe that the person who told me was telling me the truth.

The question: If VCU matches, does Teague get a final pitch to top his topped offer?

are you privy to the demands? Can VCU dig deep and pay over 2 mil a year?

See: Bulima, Bert

VCU will NOT pay over 2 million a year. I'd say the highest they raise his personal salary is 1.5 million a season. He is hoping to get a major bump up in assistants pay who are at a very low level for a team at VCU's level.

ryan is a pharmaceutical sales rep

For once I agree with THE SCOUT. Iversen is no more connected than 99.99999% of people on this board. I was rather surprised that PA put him on the air as some sort of insider.

I imagine Teague is set to offer 2.5 mil a season....just a guess...hard to pass that up...Then he could pay his assistants out of his own pocket if it means that much to him.

Not sure 2.5 would get the job done. 2.5 was offered by Illinois and was turned down. Its generally believed that in order to get Shaka you will over to pay over 3 million a year with big money for his assistants in particular Michael Rhodes.

As we saw yesterday, some on this board are more connected than 99.999999% of the media.

Go Gophers!!

Exactly! These are the best days ever, no one knows what's really going on, but everyone listens in and speculates, love the SPECULATION

With the apparent good working relationship Smart had with Teague,Ellis and company you would think that could very well be possible

Just keep in mind guys, it is not a bad thing to question "Richmondinsiders" credibility. They are making fun of him/her on the VCU msg board, thinking he's doing a great job trolling.

That's steep. Well, I guess we find out what Teague's valuation of Shaka is. There is a limit to how much is wise to pay a guy.

Selling to a desperate buyer is usually a good deal for the seller. I would put us in the desperate buyer's category here. A little like recruiting, the longer it takes, the less likely the outocme will be in our favor. Shaka has a lot of bargaining chips right now. We have none.

That's interesting.....I mean, he can try but that doesn't mean much. Kinda like Teague and promise to try to build a practice facility but we all know where that went lol.

Just got off of the phone with my lead (Big FB Donor and pretty plugged in). I trust what he says. Shaka verbally told Ellis after VCU was bounced from the tourney that he would accept the position (this is inline with Gopherladys source, FYI). They worked out the details of the contract (which he's not clear on the details) however, certain particulars like facilities were mentioned not sure which (assume practice). So, they have agreed on the terms of the deal. Shaka and Teague both thought it was best practice to allow him to do the right thing by allowing them to match. Which the donor confirms is impossible and that the announcement should happen tomorrow.

At the end of the day it comes down to whether he wants to work here or not. If he doesn't - or if he's coming only for the salary - it'll be better for both parties if we look at someone else.

Please be right.

I sure hope you are right. It would make sense too, given what has trickled out from various sources (and based on what I heard).
