Myron Takes Shot at Gophers

QFT

I was incredibly shocked when I found out ESPN had hired him. I thought Marcus did a much better job covering the team.

+1
Not sure what quality writing Myron had done in his time here that ESPN so coveted him. I've been totally unimpressed from the first time I read him until now. As for his blurb here, plenty of other posts have covered the logical deficiencies in his write-up, I'll add one more:

According to Myron's own current list, http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/powerrankings/_/show/last
of their 5 losses the Gophers have lost to his #1, #3, #4, and #23 teams, two of those on the road, one of those on neutral court, and one of those to a team (UW) that Myron criticizes the Gophers for losing to on the road, on a last-second shot that shouldn't have counted, then ranking that same team that - using his failed logic - recently won a home game that they didn't deserve against the team he just implied was poor. To call Myron an idiot is a disservice to idiots.

I find it weird that people care. I mean, he thinks we're not one of the 25 best teams. Who cares? After a loss this board implodes as though we're not even a top 50 team.

It's like Animal House...they can't do that to our pledges! Only we can do that to our pledges!

Myron interned at ESPN before gracing the strib with his presence, he was on their radar

JD, it isn't just after a loss, man. It also happens after games we win.

First, let me get it out of the way that I hated Myron's spotty coverage of the gophers with maybe 2 articles a week during the season on the Strib. He has something against the gophers now, and you can just tell.

However, he's calling it how it is right now. I do think there are 25 teams in the country better than the Gophers. Easily. Just some advice to fans: don't let a stupid national reporter tell you about the team that you cover about 10 times as well as them and quit letting your feelings get hurt by these guys, because it's just a measly observers opinion. Nothing more, the difference is its published on a well read website.

Go Gophers! (Sorry if that didn't make sense... )

We would love for you to name 25 teams better than the Gophers.

Almost as good as Doogie always citing Tubby's BT record without counting wins against Iowa. Why can't Myron just leave us alone? What the hell was ESPN thinking?

Not Myron's biggest fan but the way the Gophers are playing right now, in his defense an argument could be made that there are 25 teams more deserving of a ranking.

Duke, Miami, Butler, Saint Louis, Cincinnati, Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, Pitt, Syracuse, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Memphis (yes, I know we beat them earlier this season), Creighton, Colorado State, New Mexico, Arizona, Oregon, Florida, and Gonzaga.

That's 27. Not saying I'd rank the Gophers behind all of those teams, but all of 'em are playing pretty good basketball of late, or have been consistently good all season.

Yeah Oregon losing to Cal and Stanford (by 20!) the last two games really shows that they are playing better than us... Marquette just got blown out against a Louisville team that recently lost 3 in a row. Wisconsin still only has one impressive win all season. And those are just the teams I'm more familiar with. Having a conference record above .500 in the best conference in the country combined with a very strong out of conference record should easily result in a top 25 ranking.

Fair enough. I think the Gophers are ranked right about where they should be, somewhere in the neighborhood of #20. It's an accurate assessment of what they've accomplished over the long haul, while also taking into account how they've played of late (not nearly as well as late December/early January).

Myron has an opinion. Just like assholes, everyone's got one.

Were Esposito's tweets protected before this exchange?

I think its a fair assessment based on the "eye test."

The Gophers offense is very poor. Probably 250 better offenses in half court situations. We have no shot without transition baskets, broken plays and offensive rebounding. Defensively we are very sound but we do have a problem that we may go for too many blocks and that leaves us vulnerable to offensive rebounding by our opponents.

The other thing is that we haven't really improved at all since the start of Conference Play, whereas dozens of teams like Kentucky, UNC, Wisconsin(with Traevon Jax), Iowa (3 Freshmen), NW(great coaching), Florida St, Memphis, UCLA, Kansas State, Pitt and many, many others. Those who stagnate get passed up in February. Tubby's teams have always stagnated or regressed in February. Not sure this year will be any different. I saw no evidence of improvement in Iowa game. Just a great individual effort by Austin Hollins to save the day. Rodney and Trev both contributed almost nothing in the half court offense. Coleman had his 5 turnovers and was very spotty. Andre H had his worst shooting game since NW.

We barely beat a very mediocre team. All is not well, people. This team will get drilled by 22 if we play the same vs MSU.

Being that the Gophers didn't play that well but still won, should they even bother showing up in East Lansing tomorrow night? I think you're right. The Gophers should just concede to Sparty and start preparing for Sunday's home game vs. Illinois. Because we all know that once a team plays a few sub-par games, they're destined for the La Brea Tar Pits.

I get what your saying Moses but I disagree that Iowa is a mediocre team. If this was an average big ten year, instead of a stacked big ten, i think this Iowa team could finish in the top 5 or 6. May their 7th man is their only senior. Iowa could be a top 5 team next year, and Purdue is young and improving as well. I really hope we can get a juco pf or a suprise freshmen pf for next year.

We're not on the same level as Michigan and Indiana, but no B1G teams are.

MSU beat a struggling Illinois team in East Lansing by five last week. They squeaked out wins in Madison, and at home against Ohio State, by 2 and 3 points, respectively.

Ohio State got drilled on the road by that same poor Illinois team. Iowa had it down to a 4-point game with 1:30 to go in Columbus.

Wisconsin, well, they already lost to that mediocre Iowa team. Close wins against Penn State and Nebraska - the worst teams in the conference - do not inspire confidence.

My point being, that every team has poor marks if you're looking for them. Are we playing well as of late? No. But we're not in a considerably worse position than most other teams not named Michigan or Indiana at this point.

I suggest more of you do this to Moses. Don't feed the troll.

Iowa will probably go 8-10 with a shot at 9-9, and will be pretty interesting case on bubble day.

I was going to disagree with you, but man, they have an easy schedule down the stretch.

@ Wisc
vs NW
@ PSU
vs MN
@ Neb
vs Pur
@ Ind
vs Ill
vs Neb

They should be favored in five or six of those games (NW, PSU, Neb x 2, Illinois, Purdue). If they win all six and a game in the tournament they'd be 21-10 on selection Sunday. Intriguing case indeed.
