This is from the Star Tribune after he signed his contract:

"The contract includes a golden handcuff provision in which Smith would owe the school if he leaves voluntary. He would owe $3 million if he left before April 30, 2008. The amount decreases over time. Smith would owe no termination fee after May 1, 2010."

I think it's currently in the neighborhood of $1 mil that he would owe the U should he decide to leave. And let's be honest, with the schools going after him; they wouldn't flinch at paying the buy-out on their own, just like WVU did for Huggins.
