This is a recording from 1971, Steve Cannon on KSTP (this was couple of months before he went to WCCO). It's Vikings talk first and then gives a quick Gopher shout-out for the next game against Washington State at Memorial Stadium. For me, it was just a kick to hear Cannon's voice again. I was born in 1966 and remember hearing Cannon's show throughout the 70's riding in the backseat of the folk's car:

I think that is a young John Hines doing the actual Sportacualer commerical. When Cannon left morning drive at KSTP for the afternoon drive time at WCCO, KTSP went to a music format with Hines and Charlie Bush. The thing I remember most about Gopher Football on Saturdays was being able to pick up pre game not only on WCCO, but Also I think on WLOL with Rod Trongard. Heck, KTSP might have had a broadcast also. With all due respect for Ray Christensen, Trongard was the go to announcer. He did the Lakers, Muskies, Vikings, Coach's show, and the annual Football video recap. Both are in the Minnesota Radio Hall of fame. It's great to hear Cannon's smooth transitions, effortless advertisements, and the voices. Few new or cared he did them all. Backlash, Ma, and Morgan. He gave Eric "the Scraf" Escola his start, and regretably, Mike Max. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
 

Thanks for posting Donovan -- this takes me back. Grew up on a small dairy farm and the Cannon Mess was standard background audio during nightly chores back in the early/mid 70s. Guess I didn't know about his previous morning gig on KSTP. Morgan, Backlash and the rest of the gang were part of my youth. Mr. Cannon was a talented and entertaining radio personality.

I truly miss the cannon mess.

For those that don't remember, Morgan Mundane was the sports editor of The Congressional Record.
 

Morgan was awesome, but my favorite Cannon partner was Ma Lingerer.
 


Right Husker. I loved Ron Trongaard. Such a great voice and so enthusiastic. I dont think he is with us any longer.
 

I remember my dad's best friend telling me that his grandma didn't like the way that Morgan Mundane treated Ma Lingerer - thought he was rude.

I'm sure that type of understanding was pretty common around the state.

I'm sure many of you will remember the story after Sid introduced the late Calvin Grifith to Steve Cannon, Calvin replied "Steve seems like a great guy, but that buddy of his Morgan Mundane is a horses a$$".

I doubt that the Backlash Larue bit would fly today, but Cannon was awesome. I first remember him as the weekend sports guy on one of the Twin Cities television stations (I want to say WTCN, but that was a long, long time ago).

Cannon Mess was ahead of its time in many respects. Like SCTV, it still stands up while shows that were as or more popular in the same era seem dated and not nearly as funny as they did when first broadcast.
 


19, could be, but my memory tells me that Channel 9, KMSP was the independent station back then. But I was wrong once before, so...take that for what it is worth. Way back when, I think WTCN was NBC, KSTP was ABC, and WCCO was CBS, KMSP was the independent.

KMSP was the ABC affiliate. KSTP was NBC and WCCO was (and is CBS). WTCN was independent (a Chris-Craft station). ABC had a couple of hot seasons and (in 1978) KSTP became the ABC affiliate. In a surprise move, WTCN ended up NBC and KMSP had no chair when the music stopped.

Well, then I guess i was wrong. I had forgotten about things that far back. But then again, I have forgotten lots of things and can't remember most of them. I stand corrected.

Actually Dr. Don, if you go way back, the channel lineup was originally WTCN 10 (Independent), KMSP 9 (ABC), KSTP 5 (NBC), and WCCO 4 (CBS). I believe KMSP had different call letters , but can't remember what they were. May have been KEYD. Also had KUOM 12, the educational channel.
 

Showed this to my pops, who loved it. He also asked the following which I couldn't answer:

Cool, do they have all games? Thinking of some games when I was a kid at Memorial Stadium like USC, or games with Tony Dungy or Rick Upchurch
