Mike Max filled in for Dave Mona on the Sports Huddle. Coach Kill's responses to Sid and Mike's questions are as follows:

1) Coach Kill opened the show saying he was meeting with recruits and said they were continuing to talk about last night's exciting basketball victory over the Illini.

2) Max wanted to know how he'd rank this year's recruiting class: Kill immediately responded saying this is "Nerve-wracking time." (He repeated that feeling at other times during the interview.) Kill went onto say if everything works out, "We've improved ourselves athletically and skill-wise." He said, "We need to hold them in there."

3) Sid asked about the team's speed: There are eight early enrollees in this year's class and six of the 10 fastest players on the team are from the newly arrived group including 2 true-freshman. He said he's been locked-in in recruiting, but the strength and conditioning coaches have passed on the information. He said they were pleased with the results. "You've got to be able to run at all positions." He then said, "Speed runs you out of a lot a mistakes." He mentioned the team speed of the SEC and specifically LSU, Alabama and he mentioned West Virginia as a team with good speed.

4) Marquies Gray: "He's going to get better and better. We're looking forward to next year and spring." He's about 242 pounds and fast.

5) Alipate: They convinced him to move to TE, which he'll be experimenting with the move this spring. The strength and conditioning coaches are pleased with his effort at weight reduction. He's lost 30 pounds!

6) Recruiting style or method of replacing players: Put best athletes at certain positions. Can't fill all the positions of need because of numbers available. Focused on TE and DBs. He stressed it's extremely important you develop the players you recruit and sign. He also said they try to recruit a couple players that have been offered scholarships to 1AA (FCS) schools to the U. (I believe he was referring to walkons, a term he doesn't like.) He doesn't use the term walkon or preferred walkon, "I call them team members that will earn scholarships." Sid asked how many walkons received schollies last year: Kill responded by saying four scholarships were awarded. He plans to bring in 8-10 walkons in this year's class. "Every kid we recruit meets with me." He tries to ascertain if they can fit in and add to the team's chemistry. (Looks toward the recruits character, too.)

7) Once again Kill sang the praise of the academic center/staff. They put pressure on the players during the season so as not to neglect their coursework, which resulted in the team's academic success (3.01 GPA).

8) Signing day party at TCF Stadium starting at 6:00 p.m. Suggested the listeners check with the U's website (gophersports.com) for additional information.

9) "Dead period" Monday and Tuesday, They can make only one phone call per recruit tonight. "Hope we can keep all the players on board." He said again that this is the nerve-wrackng time in recruiting. Nothing is firm until the recruit signs on the dotted line.

10) Sid asked about Beal, Marcus Jones and Stoudermire and their phyiscal condition/status: Beal is continuing his rehab and will not participate in spring drills. Jones and Stoudermire will be available for spring practice.

Go Gophers!!

Thanks for the summary!!!

Thanks as always, DL.

I am kind of curious about the 'numbers available' and if coach Kill thought we couldn't recruit enough TEs, or wanted more for that matter? I understand we need DBs, but I guess I didn't expect we needed more TEs? Maybe he still hopes to get Johnson

DL65 you deserve a medal. I can only offer my thanks. As I read your recap, and you stated Max was in for Dave my first instinct was to change the channel, but years of smart a@@@ Max I cannot take it any more. He was baiting the Coach from the jump, and Coach deflected beautifully. Thank you DL65 for reporting the facts.

"There are eight early enrollees in this year's class and six of the 10 fastest players on the team are from the newly arrived group including 2 true-freshman."

If I remember correctly, the true freshmen that enrolled early are Nelson, Leidner, and Ekpe. I heard Nelson was fast, but I'd be shocked if he was one of the 10 fastest on the team, yet alone Leidner or Ekpe?

Kill likes his TE's, they use multiple in his offense and they are kind of lean at the position outside of Rabe (who will a Senior) and Goodger. I think Maxx Williams could get some early playing time there (if they don't play him on defense), same for Lincoln Plesek. I wonder how Moses Alipate takes to the change. Ernie Heifort could push for some playing time too.

Thanks for the update BTW DL!

There's no way this reporting is accurate. They've already said that 5 out of the fastest 10 were the incoming JuCos, meaning if the "6 out of 10" stat is true, only one spot would be open for a frosh. There's no question that Nelson is the fastest of those three, but I sincerely doubt that he's one of the fastest 10 players on the team.

If it is true, Nelson is either ridiculously fast or Kill wasn't kidding when he said the team lacked speed. We will see.

Of all the interviews I have heard with Kill-and i have heard many-this is the happiest I have heard him. He seemed almost giddy. Not sure if it happy with his success in recruiting locally or something we dont know about.

Coach Kill said he had been locked-in in recruiting and that the info was from the strength and conditioning coaches. It's unfortunate that he can't use names at this time. That said, he did say 6 of the 10 fastest players on the team are from the early enrollees . . . then the phrase two freshman was used. That would be a good question for clarification at the Signing Day Social.

I agree it's unlikely but I had seen in reported elsewhere that they incoming recruits were the fastest of those players currently on campus. Which leads me to believe that this race (or whatever) was conducted before the semester started without the full team participating.

According to Rivals, Nelson runs a 4.5 forty.

I wish we had more 4.4 or better guys, but I'm not so sure we do.

+1

Couldn't the 2 true freshman be kids he brought in this summer, who are technically still true freshman?

Since it has been established that 5 JUCO's brought in (Shabazz, Balthazar, Boddy, Fruechte, Gillum) are 5 of the fastest 10 during winter testing, who are the 5 current team members (that are healthy enough to do the testing) that are in the top 10? We could assume Marcus Jones would be one, but he would not be running due to his rehab. Keanon Cooper, Troy Stoudemire and DCT seem like locks to me. I am thinking maybe Devon Wright and Derrick Engel (thats my sleeper pick) as well. Other thoughts?

Michael Carter?

The little bit I have seen of Devon Wright he has looked very fast AND quick (they do not always go together). Lamonte Edwards is very fast as well.

Those were my thoughts as well. Don't get a chance to listen every week but he seemed in great spirits.

I've heard repeatedly that Cooper is one of the fastest, if not the fastest on the team.

QB'S and TE

Jerry mentioned Moses will be moving to TE and I would expect maybe Foreman moving to Safety . I think with Nelson and Shortell in the wings this would make sense to have him move also to see if he can help on D and special teams. Leidner would then be giving a good shot at the scout team QB and see if he can play QB or move to TE. Looks like Jerry wants to get the athletes into positions to help the team. Your thoughts ?

I'd be very surprised if he moved Foreman this year unless Nelson clearly wins #2 job. Think you need Foreman at QB for depth.

Also Jerry/Matt in the past liked to mix it up with the wildcat. Foreman would be a good canidate for that.

I still don't get the Wildcat talk. Do you bring in a different "running QB" when your starter is already the best running QB on the team?

Foreman is not switching positions.

You could lineup Foreman along side Gray. It's not something you'd do 10 times a game or anything, but a nice wrinkle you could throw in once or twice.
