Oh, goodness, I love college football.

Never saw this coming.

And ISU scores in one play. All the pressure on the Pokes now.

JohnnyGopher just sent me a text that two of the JUCO DBs we had visiting last weekend that we really want are visiting Iowa State right now.

I have to think this game was a bit more impressive than our home game vs. Wisconsin.

Go Gophers!!

They're gonna have to get new goalposts in Ames if this one finishes how it looks like it will

Pretty cool scene there in Ames with tens of thousands of fans on the field singing Sweet Caroline.

So is it an Alabama vs. LSU title game? Can Oregon get in?

Go Gophers!!

Ahh of course we have Gopher recruits visiting Ames tonight. This is what I hate about finesse offenses. When it is not clicking, you can lose to anyone.

Field still overwhelmed by fans. 1/2 hour after the final whistle. Great scene.

Oregon is not worthy of a national championship game. They have laid eggs (no pun intended) in their last couple of bcs bowl games. Lsu would kick the crap out of them. Beating PAC 12 teams does not mean your are a national contender.

Who cares Stodemire is coming back and a Juco CB committed last week.

JUCO CB Stokes is @ his Iowa St. visit tonight. That game may have hurt the Gophs chances for him. He had some interesting tweets.

I am so torn on who should be in the BCS title game. Here are some things I believe in, ranked in order of importance.
1. I firmly believe that teams that don't win their conference should not play for the national title. So assuming LSU wins the SEC that would remove Alabama from consideration for me.
2. I firmly believe that the national title game should not be a rematch. SO assuming LSU is the #1 team then that would remove Alabama and Oregon from consideration for me.
3. I believe when comparing 1-loss teams then the quality and location of your loss should have a big factor. Oregon's neutral site loss to LSU ranks higher than Alabama's home loss on paper, but losing by 13 compared to 3 is a decent sized difference. For quality of loss I put Oregon and Alabama at a tie and put Oklahoma 3rd. Oklahoma's home loss to Texas Tech looks horrible.

It's extremely close but I just can't get past that Alabama didn't even win their division, much less their conference (assuming LSU runs the table). Based on the 3 things I listed above as having value to me, Alabama fails at 2 of them, Oregon fails at 1 of them and Oklahoma fails at 1 of them. So I would have to give Oregon or Oklahoma the nod...probably Oklahoma since the 1 thing they fail at is least important to me.

THis mess combined with the continued talk of Super COnferences is going to pave the way for a playoff, IMHO.

Looks like Cliff Stokes is going to be committing to Iowa State: https://twitter.com/#!/cliffstokes24

Not the type of school I want to be competing with for recruits, much less losing recruiting battles to. That said, he did attend the biggest win in that programs history, so it's not surprising he's "probably" going to sign there. Paul Rhoads has now defeated Nebraska and Minnesota in year 1, Texas in year 2, and Iowa and number 2 Oklahoma State in year 3. That's quite an accomplishment for a first time head coach taking over a team in Ames, Iowa.

Paul Rhoads could be putting himself in line for one of the many better head coaching opportunities that will be coming up shortly though. He's done a nice job at Iowa State.

Was thinking the same thing. If all else is considered equal for him (playing time, liking both campuses, etc.) then that game and scene last night is definitely going to win out over what he saw last weekend.

But really...Ames???

Kids get pretty excited. I wouldn't put too much into what someone says immediately following. Things change all the time especially with these kids. The next visit he goes on will probly be his favorite, and then the one after that...

Before we put LSU in the title game, remember they still have to play Arkansas and Georgia. They lost to Arkansas in the exact same situation four years ago....I hope they never go to a playoff. These regular season games mean everything and that what makes college football unique.

Stokes posted the same style tweets while he was visiting here. It's easy to jump the gun and commit whenever you witness a game like that, but if he were to go home and think it over, I still think we'd have a solid chance.

I'm not trying to turn this into a playoff argument, but what if Oklahoma St. won last night and then loses to Oklahoma later on, and LSU loses in a close game to Georgia? That was a real possibility this year and that could have resulted in 7-8 one loss teams. Total chaos.

8-team playoff with the first round being at the higher seeds' home stadium. Games still means a ton, being able to play at home the first round is huge.

Very well reasoned post and I cannot dispute any of the points you made. As I stated above I would rather see anyone besides Oregon. The PAC 12 is not a strong conference, despite what pac 12 fans tell you, so I believe that Lsu (assuming they remain undefeated) would mop the floor with them. I also believe ou will lose to Lsu as well in light of the fact that they lost to freaking Texas tech. And, although I agree that Alabama should not go since they did not win their conference, I believe it would be the most competitive game considering all the 1 loss teams.

Mike Gundy blasting off in 3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . .

Agree that Rhoads is putting himself on the map for possible move-up in the coaching ranks.

I'm not sure I agree with your logic here. I think there should be only one criteria for deciding who makes the title game: who is the best team? Who has the best resume? Certainly, bad losses (like OU's to TT) weaken a resume. But I don't buy the idea that Alabama should be out of consideration because they happen to be in the same decision as the clear-cut No. 1, or Oregon should necessarily be out because they already played and lost to LSU. Say OU, Oregon, and Alabama all finish with one loss. Under your system, you'd reward Oklahoma because, out of the three teams, they were the one with the one who didn't lose to the best team in the nation. OU has the worst loss, but gets rewarded for it? I can't agree with that.

The best two teams should be on the field playing for the NC. Period. There's no other criteria to consider. And I think it's pretty obvious that LSU and Alabama are the two best teams in the nation.

So they aren't worth because of previous bowl games? One of the worst excuses I've ever heard. They lost to Auburn last year, who also beat Alabama, South Carolina twice, LSU, and Arkansas. They lost against LSU in the first week. Why shouldn't they get a chance?

Because they have established a pattern that will repeat itself again this year if they go to the nat'l championship game against LSU. They play well in the pac 12 (a weak conference) then play in a bowl game against an out of conference team and lose. People think that because Ore. puts up big numbers against other pac 12 teams they are a great team. However, as LSU demonstrated earlier this year and teams have shown in previous bowl games, Ore is an overrated team. They may be good int he Pac 12, but once they get outside the Pac 12, they suddenly don't have the offensive output. If Oregon were to play LSU in the nat'l championship game this year, LSU wins hands down.

I'm sorry, I just can't buy the, "it has happened before, so it will happen again," theory. There are many instances where this has been proven false, aka the Boston Red Sox. Yes, LSU beat Oregon early this season, but Oregon was replacing 12 starters from the national championship contending team from the previous team, who lost to a great Auburn team on a last second field goal. I also don't think that just because the Pac 12 is weak, doesn't mean that they should get a shot. If Wisconsin would have finished the season 12-1, would you have said they do not belong in the title game because the big ten is insanely weak this year?

The conference's strength is used as a determining factor in ranking teams, so it is figured in when deciding the BCS rankings.

Lost in all of this is that Alabama lost to LSU AT HOME.

Not trying to be inflammatory, but have you ever had the chance to spend any time in Ames or on the ISU campus?

I'm from Minnesota, grew up a big Gopher fan, went to ISU, and moved back here after school. With that said, I personally prefer the college experience Ames/ISU has to offer compared to Minnesota. (I've spent a lot of time on the UM campus with friends who went to the U...football/bball games, parties, etc.)

That's just me, but I'd guess others (certainly not all) might feel the same way occassionally.
