Penn State news conference in minutes; JoePa reportedly out, riot police at his house

AGAIN ESPN craps the bed and puts their interests ahead of journalistic integrity. The same for BTN.

Whoever let the students into the presser should be fired.

This is a national embarrassment for PSU and will screw them FOREVER.

I hope those young men and women out there on the streets of State College realize that they are only bringing further shame to their university. Get some perspective people.

First and foremost, I feel terrible for the victims of this heinous crime and I hope Sandusky rots in hell.

I feel awful for the seniors of PSU. Their final game at home and this is what they get after all they've put into this program? Not what they deserve. The so called leaders of Penn State need to start acting that way.

This was a lynch mob. They should have let JoePa finish the season or at least the week and say goodbye
Fix the blame on the 84 year old and maybe it goes away. I hope not. Fire all associated with this- including the board of trustees.

Paterno was told nine years ago that his defensive coordinator was anally raping a 10 year old boy. He was told this by an eyewitness to the rape. For the past nine years, Paterno has let that man keep an office in the football complex, has allowed him to associate with the team, and stood side by side with him at team and school events. Paterno. Knew.

The people who are against this move haven't read the report. Clearly, the students haven't either.

Crazy thing is that Sandusky's address is in the report.

As someone on twitter said the craziness is going to be on saturday night after the game when people are drunk.

Again, the Penn State population is completely brainwashed. My friends are updating me on these riots and apparently it is outrageous.

I have so mixed emotions. I have (maybe should say had) utmost respect for Joe Paterno and I always lusted at Penn State football. He was such a legend and seemed like such a good hearted old man that I hate to see a legacy tarnished in such fashion. On the other hand, the crimes were heinous and those involved all need the book thrown at them. Doing those things to pre-pubecent boys is truly awful. I admit, I don't have cable TV so I am not getting all the information because I don't have the time to read extensive articles on them (or the patience after schoolwork), but this is just so unfortunate. My heart goes out to the kids, but yet- I wish Joe Pa got better than this. I am just sad.

If you had readextensive articles on this situation, you would not wish Joe Pa got better than this. You would not be wishing him well at all. The Board of Trustees, after firing him, said much more has yet to come out. Given what has already come out, that statement literally sent chills down my spine. I will repeat what I said above: Paterno. Knew.

The scene in Happy Valley sickens me, these are college kids so they should be somewhat smart right?? Molestation is soo not cool.

The kids just don't get it. They think it's about football.

An ABC reporter said that a few students came up to them and said they supported the decision and thought the reactions from other students were ridiculous. They declined to be interviewed however because they didn't want to get beat up. Unbelievable.

I would be afraid to have my identity revealed to the mindless, brainwashed student population if I agreed with the firing.

psufootblog Collegian Footblog
Joe Paterno has just come out to address the crowd. Urged the students to "go study" and pray for the victims. Video forthcoming.

Surma absolutely killed the presser. He's the CEO of U.S. Steel and his son played for PSU.

People are upset about how he was told. Honestly, does it really matter how he's told? It's like Paterno and others are trying to deflect the outrage.

The more I watch, the more pissed off I get. Paterno still doesn't get it and I don't think he every will.

What is with these morons at Penn St? Students are demonstrating and flipping over tv vans protesting the firing of individuals involved in brushing over a child rape.

That's exactly what I was thinking. These kids are completely brainwashed, and their fearless leader JoePa is just oblivious to it all. He's more concerned about telling the students he loves them more then anything else right now.

But..."THEY ARE....PENN STATE!" Give me a break.

I don't think Paterno is going to be around much longer. Guys that spend their lives doing something they love tend to give up when they are forced into retirement.

I can't really complain about JoePa being fired, but I do feel bad. It has been said that Paterno told the AD as soon as he was told about it and the AD didn't do anything. Obviously he should have done more tho.

What i'm really wondering is what the football game is going to be like there this saturday.

But he can still exist to help PSU, that might be enough for him.

Although I couldn't give a S#$# rumor is there may be players protesting playing...

Move the game to a neutral site outside of Pennsylvania.

WE ARE PENN STATE WE LOVE CHILD MOLESTER PROTECTORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doesn't have the same ring but thats all I will ever think about this sick *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# of a program and fan base. Sorry won't ever care about young adults taking money but will always care about grown men looking the other way to protect wins and legacy when it comes to little kids being taken advantage of.

Mobs are easy, folks, and that's what's going on here. Most of the kids there are there just to see what the hell is going on; witness it; tell others about it; have a story to tell their friends "I was there!". It's like every doorknob who ever went crazy in front of a media camera for no reason than to say "hey look at me!"

I eyewitnessed the first Penn State "riot" back in the summer of 1998. After fun night of partying on the biggest party weekend of the summer, I was there on the street watching in bewilderment as a mob erupted in a "riot", blocking all of the street, tearing down lightpoles on Beaver Avenue (33 in total!), burning garbage in the street, doing some damage to store fronts and such. It wasn't an angry mob; it was just a mob, doing what drunken mobs do - stupid things. Like most of those couple thousand on the street I did not personally participate in any of the stupid things going on, just watched in bewilderment/amazement, just like most of those that are there tonight. Actually did some civic duty, myself, in physically preventing some stupid kids from kicking in some store windows.

On to tonight:
The truth of the matter is this. Joe Paterno is an icon. You don't understand what this man meant/means to Penn State unless you've lived there. He IS/was Penn State. People's whole lives, they put this man on a pedestal, rightly or wrongly. Suddenly, he is accused of immoral actions (gross negligence or total cover-up of a heinous crime, to be exact), and those who idolized him, put him as the face of the entire university, are simply not ready within 3 days time of accepting this. You're witnessing first-hand the "denial" and "anger" stages of grief, folks.

You can blame the students all you want. I've seen some of the interviews, heard the reports of (relatively minor) violence and property damage, seen the images of the crowds (most of whom are simply witnesses, no more), seen interviewees saying what sound to me like stupid things; and others making intelligent interviews. You can criticize the kids all you want for the mob mentality, but to call them brainwashed is idiodical (I'm going to guess that many of those using the "brainwashed" adjective to describe these kids are loyal subjects to the massive Talk Radio complex, for example). The truth of the matter is simple - a big part of the world of most of the kids at Penn State, and of we alumni, came crashing down horrifically within a few days time. They're running through a bunch of emotions related to the crimes committed, their fallen icons, their university, their home. This type of reaction should not be unexpected, and is simply not that excessive considering the huge changes going on right now in young adult lives.

If nothing more happens tonight and in the coming days than some property damage and minor injuries, then I think the unbelievable transitions occurring right now at Penn State have gone over amazingly well. There are plenty of other places in the world, even in this nation, that would behave much, much worse under these kinds of circumstances.
