it is possible that who ever plays quarterback is going to appear as though they are very inexperienced. Perhaps, that is because ALL the Gopher Quarterbacks ARE very inexperienced. ; 0 )
The Offensive Line ALSO needs to gel and to gain experience working as a unit. That is painfully obvious right now.
I think that the offensive line has the potential to play better than they have been playing. I believe that they will improve. That certainly would help every aspect of the offense.
Since both quarterbacks are very inexperienced, one of them has to emerge as the more experienced quarterback. I do agree with Winnipeg's suggestion that it is time to play only Mr. Gray. He has basically played 6 quarters. Our true freshman qb has played 2 quarters. There are 8 quarters of Non-Conference football to be played yet in 2011. For the most part, the offensive line will have MOST, if not ALL of the current starters playing the next 8 quarters, barring injury. This is a good thing. They will gain experience. They will improve. As the offensive line gains experience, I fully believe that the running backs will also gain experience and will improve in their yards per carry averages.
Gray needs repetitions. He needs to be left on the field. He needs to speed up his own game as the game itself slows down for him. He needs to take it to the defense and as he does, his game will come to him. He can do things to help the offensive line stay on the field as he helps the offense gain valuable yards...and first downs as he rushes for positive yardage outside the pocket. As he learns to respond, create difficult situations for linebackers and defensive backs, he also escapes the closing of rushing lanes by defensive linemen. He NEEDS these next 8 quarters to learn to take total responsibilty for this offensive line...for these running backs...for these receivers...for this offense as his own abilities to gain positive yards and move the chains and lead his team into the end zone grow more certain...more polished...more effective.
Gray NEEDS to have 14 quarters of running this team from the qb positon under his belt in order to get ready for the Big Ten Season. The offensive line NEEDS to have Gray lead this team for the next 8 quarters so that they can get ready for the Big Ten Season. IF Gray speeds up his game as the game comes to him, the offensive line will begin to create a few more opportunities for the running backs.
And you just never know: IF the Gophers can start running the ball...they just MIGHT do a little better at "stopping the run..." and pretty soon you have got REAL football being played!
Stick with Gray for the next 8 quarters. He gives this offensive line the best chance to succeed right now. 14 quarters of experience is better than 12 quarters of experience. There are many needs right now. IMHO, getting Gray as much experience as possible is the greatest need right now. I am seeing progress with each quarter that he plays.
Note to Mr. Gray: never let the armchair quarterbacks calling for the back-up qb get you down...and Mr Shortell, stay ready should your name be called. You are doing fine and your reps will come. But, now is the time of the season for the starting quarterback to be the starting quarterback.
