I was a little shocked to see what the Gopher rushing records are for quarterbacks (2nd in parentheses). Seem a bit lower than I imagined--and attainable:

Rushing yards, game - 160, Stephens vs Michigan 1961 (Ricky Foggie 153)
Rushing yards, season - 831, Cockerham 1999 (Foggie 647)
Rushing TDs, season - 10, Cockerham 1999 (Foggie/Stephens 9)
100 yard rushing games, career - 4, Cockerham and Foggie

I'd love to think Q could have a shot at one or more of these records--what do you think?

I think he could break the single game record and still have "just a good year" (for context, Harnish went for 178 against NoDak last year in Kill's system - so it is possible).

I found it interesting that he will either have a monster/great/good year, and if he doesn't have any of those it is a massive fail. I think he will have a very middle of the road year. I think there are just too many transitions going on/variables for him to have a really strong season (totally new staff, new-ish position, new offensive line, a lot of new receivers other than McKnight).

I am excited to see what he can do this year, and even more excited for 2012 when he has had some time to learn the position under Limegrover.

I am also curious to see if he can beat any of those records. I think that maybe the total rushing TD's might be the most attainable? Or maybe the single game? Not really sure.

Yeah, i'm in the same boat. I think Gray will have average to below average passing stats (i expect a lot of INTs), but will show enough on the ground to get really excited for 2012.

I think he can get the career 100 yd rushing games, but it won't be this year.

I think he'll have the career 100 yd rushing games record by the 3rd game this year.

If he gets lots of INTs, then he will be pulled for Shortell. MG will be used in other ways to get him in the game. He is a great athlete, but INTs lose games. Kill will not tolerate mistakes like that. MG has been around long enough to understand Coach Kills primary rule: perform or perish.

I'm shocked Foggie didn't have more than 128 yards in a game.

Next year will be the year with the O-Line having more experience.
We may be replacing 3/5 of the oline and we will be more experience? 2013 is the year for the O-Line to dominate.

While we might be replacing 3/5 starters, the left tackle will be potentially in his 3rd year starting, 2nd year starter for right tackle, T. Olsen will get some experience this year and be one of your guards, and I'm guessing the other two positions will be filled with guys that get experience this year as well. Maybe dominant in 2013 but I would say we will be much better next year as well.

This offense does seem to be ideal for a QB to break some rushing records. Get the defense to focus on stopping the run, and then burn them with the pass.

I'll say it.
Q probably is moved back to WR by the time the 2011 BT schedule begins. It'll be need based on WR and too many turnovers from the arm/hands of MG. i want to be wrong but Parish and Shortell better be ready.

I think that's insane, given Kill's offensive style and propensity for a mobile quarterback. But, IF it happens, we are screwed beyond belief.

I don't see Gray having too many INT's in the NC schedule. I don't think he will force anything because he knows he can always run if there isn't someone open.

I have watched the rise and fall of Gray as a starting quarterback... all before he has taken a single snap as the starter. Gotta love the fan boards.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Some people won't even give him a chance to show what he can do.

nah, I am looking at history which is the predictor of the future. Gray has had WR success but who knows about success for MG at QB.

LOL The Good News Is ......

That's exactly what I was thinking. Some people won't even give him a chance to show what he can do.

....that the fans won't be making that decision. It will be Coach Kill who is quite aware that the second string quarterbacks is the most popular player on the team. Kill is not going to make the type incredulously irrational decisions that a few of our Gopherhole "experts" or as Sid would call them "geniuses" are suggesting be made.

Thank god Gray has a lot more class than these guys. He has even suggested that it would be good for Shortell to get some game experience this week to help him in his development. I have to assume that the people who made those comments are trolls. It is the only thing that would justify making such a incredulously dumb remark.

I've not seen any indication that Gray's starting position is in jeopardy. I think Kill might know a bit more about the situation than we do.

Well, that's one. He has 301 yards rushing after three games, two 100 yard games. He needs 531 yards in the next nine games, which is 59 a game.

Go Q! Go Gophers!

Dang right! I see everyone of those records going down this year, except maybe the TDs in a season. THe more confidence he gets, the more dynamic this kid is going to be. He may then break them all again next year if he stays healthy. I know, I know, getting ahead of myself. See what one win can do? :)

If he keeps carrying the ball 25 times a game, there's no reason to believe he won't break all kinds of records.

Up to 500 yards and 3 tds. Not looking good for the TD record, but has a chance for the other two.

Rushing yards, game
171 - MarQueis Gray
160 - Sandy Stephens
153 - Ricky Foggie

Rushing yards, season
831 - Billy Cockerham
647 - Ricky Foggie
418 - MarQueis Gray (on pace for 718)

Rushing TDs, season
10 - Billy Cockerham
9 - Ricky Foggie
9 - Sandy Stephens
3 - MarQueis Gray (on pace for 6)

100 yard rushing games, career
4 - Billy Cockerham
4 - Ricky Foggie
1 - MarQueis Gray

I looked back at the games, the next closest was a 97 yard game.
