Kill has a third JC player coming for a visit on 1/7/11. Junior Osunde a DB will be making a visit. I believe most of the JC guys will count toward 2010 and not affect the 2011 number of 25. Depth is the issue and Kill and staff are working hard to build it.

Osunde profile from GI.

No choice but to go after Juco with our immediate holes, especially in D backfield and at receiver. It's worked for other programs, especially for Bill Snyder at Kansas State.

I wouldn't mind seeing half a dozen (or so) January guys. Depth is a problem in the defensive backfield and we still don't know if there will be any more defections.

Juco guys are good if you can both get them into school and keep them there.

Often their grades are a concern. I remember NDSU wrestling always had a great Juco guy coming in, but each year it seemed to fall through because of grades.

Kill has a rep for using JUCO talent to fill needs, he did it at SIU with alot of success.
I imagine he's identified what we need and is filling accordingly, a few things:
-He has had success with it in the past, which means he probably has a good idea of coaches that will recommend kids that A) Have the talent to play and B)Will qualify. Hope I'm right on this, Brewster had numerous academic casualties from his JUCO recruits.
-The fact that several JUCOs and January qualifiers can be attributed to the 2010 class is a big plus.
-We are thin at S, CB, WR, no surprise that is where we are seeing JUCOs recruited to. I'm willing to bet we see at least a few more that will be attributed to the 2011 class, no way Kill wants to burn redshirts on some of the HS prospects from this class if he can avoid it.

Agreed. It appears that Kill is uber-serious about academics, so I'm less worried--at least out of the gate--about this set of JUCOs.

Kill said on Sport Huddle that they've identified their position needs. Kill to me seems very shrewd and realistic whereas Brewster was in love with certain types of players and was willing to wait and see if they could qualify or not. I still can't believe Brewster signed the two JUCOs from Lackawana only to find out later that both of them didn't have two years of eligibility left between them. Anyway, I doubt Kill will take as many recruiting risks as Brewster did down the stretch. Kill has been a head coach too long to make rookie mistakes like Brewster.

Kill's attitude seems to be that the less problems the recruit has, the more time can be spent getting the player to play the best football he can. Discipline and academic problems take a lot of time dealing with.

It's good that Kill is high on academics because the one eye opener he may have is how much more difficult it is to get kids academically qualified than it is at the schools he has been at. The U doesn't seem to let anything slide when admitting students.

As demonstrated by the recruiting class Brewster had so far this year, I think he finally learned that getting the solid recruit is better than spending too much time and then waiting on the blue chippers.

Regarding the 2 Lackawana recruits, I don't think anyone in the nation knew they had only 1 year left. The recruits didn't know, their CC coach didn't know, so how would Brew know? It was too bad, but I can't rail on Brewster for that one.

The Lackawanna situation was not going to be found until a real admissions department looked at the whole transcript.
I don't see much reason to burn redshirts on this class for any reason because the strength is in the o-line where there are a lot of redshirt freshmen to try before the true freshmen. The only place a freshman is going to play next year is at dback or wr, and I don't know if any of this year's recruits are that mature. He may even try to redshirt a couple of kids who played last year and were obviously not ready like Vereen and Manuel. If he can, that could be a big win. I'm just happy we did not play Tauefa down the stretch, that would really have been a waste.

That thought crossed my mind.

Yeah, I was kind of thinking the same thing. It would be nice if we could RS pretty much this entire class. It would be ideal if we could consider RS Vereen and possibly Manuel but i'm not sure how possible that is going to be.

Maresh?

Has anyone heard the status of Sam Maresh? Will he join the Gophers next year?

I don't see him in Maroon and Gold. Brewster possibly put too much expectations on the kids shoulders.
