All Things Movie/Documentary Reviews/Recommendations Thread

Well this is one heck of an endorsement. I may have to check this out.

Whenever I see Justified, have to give a like.
I imagine I have Justified ranked higher than just about anyone when it comes to best TV dramas, right behind The Wire and Mad Men and in the same ballpark with The Sopranos and The Americans. I can acknowledge it’s not as tightly constructed as the others and not as serious, but the dialogue, characters, and the match of Olyphant and Goggins made each episode rollicking good fun.

It's not often that I am eager to see a film a 2nd time at home so quickly after watching it in a theater, but I did take in Project Hail Mary again.

I will double down on my recommendation. I enjoyed it just as much on this go around.

I liked seeing how earlier scenes meshed together with what I knew would be the eventual outcome.

It's quite a fantastic piece of work.
Watched it last night at home. Really liked it but want to watch again as I think (know) i missed a few things that would help tie it all together. Didn't help that I was a little sleepy when we turned it on. As mentioned, Gosling is fantastic.

Holy shit. It's just hard to imagine a world where this does anything other than flop at the box office.... and still win Oscars because it checked a bunch of boxes that you MUST check if you expect to win "awards".

Might be best to actually watch it first? Four random accounts do not tell us much IMO. Lots of others had good reviews of the movie.

It's not hard at all to envision this Christopher Nolan vehicle not flopping.

96% Fresh.

It certainly could, but it would be a huge outlier in Nolan's body of work.

I took a gander at the background of those Twitter accounts-from what I can glean, it’s people whose narrative has nothing to do with the quality or merits of the film itself.

You're excited about this? From everything you've heard and seen? I wouldn't have watched it anyway, it's not really my kind of movie. But the film just sounds lackluster from everything I've seen.

I mean, I get why certain demos will feel like they are obligated to support it, that much is obvious, but this just sounds like an awful way to spend several hours of your life

Before you suffer a stroke from your current 72 hour rage posting rampage, there must be a place for you to safely watch "2000 Mules for Sister Kate" somewhere.

I mean who can argue with Lady Erin D.

This reminds me of a recent conversation I had with my 5 year old.

Me: "Do you want to try some pork chops?"

Her: "I don't like them, they're yucky!"

Me: "Have you ever tried them?"

Her: "No"

Are we really at a point where we can't be honest about the movie?

As I said, there will absolutely be demos that feel they are obligated to support it. We already see that right here in just a few posts.

Listening to this insufferable, self-absorbed person talk about the film was enough for me to avoid it several weeks ago

What is so hard to understand that if 96% out of 238 Movie Critics (per Rotten Tomatoes) give it a favorable rating, that there just might be something that audiences, perhaps in large numbers, may find worthwhile in the experience?

You're not going to see it which is fine. You know your own taste.

Ripping it without seeing it would be like me trashing the World Cup of which I have seen practically zilch of my own choosing.

Hmmmm....

Long as I can remember, we see good previews and we say "I gotta go see that!" and we see shit previews and we say "Zero chance I'm going to see that!" All these things have apparently changed in recent weeks/months and I never got the memo?

I do everything I can to avoid previews, too much plot spoiling for my taste. Hate them.

If a terrible movie has 3-5 good minutes, the preview can feature that material (especially for a comedy) and lead one into a bad movie going decision, as the other 90 minutes or so might really suck.

Well NOW it makes sense!

Wait a minute, NOW we're believing the critics? When did that change again?

WE may not.

I always have trusted the ones I trust and/or a consenus.

I certainly do not believe your opinion when it's only based on a 2-3 minute snippet of a full body of work.

Find me a movie with dudes dressed up similar to gladiators and wielding swords, I’m all over it.
