Per Shama:

The University of Minnesota’s M Club, one of Americas’ s largest and oldest varsity letterwinner clubs, will induct 10 new Hall of Fame members on October 2 in a ceremony at Huntington Bank Stadium. But not included among the inductees is Minnesota native Matt Spaeth who won the John Mackey award in 2006 as the most outstanding tight end in college football.

Spaeth, a two-time All-Big Ten selection who holds the school career record for tight ends with 1,293 receiving yards, was a four-year starter for the Golden Gophers. It’s puzzling why he has been overlooked so long for Hall of Fame selection.

“Two Time All Big Ten selection”. I’d probably go with All American and Super Bowl champion as more impressive feats to mention. Didn’t realize he wasn’t inducted. Unless there is some pre-determined time limit that has to pass before you’re eligible, it’s pretty egregious he isn’t in it.

Tried to find out by googling as to the time link but failed. Wonder if he burned a bridge somewhere that I couldn't Imagin. He should be in.
 


Looking at the football players it is interesting MBIII is not in but Maroney is. Eslinger is in, Decker, Ron Johnson are in, no Spaeth or Utecht or Setterstrom. Hamilton is in, Tyrone Carter is in, no Willie Middlebrooks. No one from the Kill or Fleck eras is in

I honestly don't know how anyone with common sense can honor Maroney and not Barber at the same time. Their names are synonymous with each other. When it is said and done, Laurence Maroney is probably my favorite Gopher of all-time, but you can't say his name without MBIII.

It was the "Barber and Maroney" era and their names will be linked forever.

Because Maroney was better?
 





Mason seemed to move talented players recruited to play defense to the offensive side of the ball. Sometimes it worked--Spaeth and Barber III--and sometimes it didn't as in the case of Alex Daniels. If Mason hadn't been fired and JJ Watt had maintained his commitment to the U of M as a TE prospect, we not have seen Watt on his way to the NFL Hall of Fame. Watt should probably send a thank you card to Joel Maturi.

As for Shama's point, Spaeth should be in the Gophers' Hall of Fame.
 

Is this possibly just a case of only a small amount of players can get in each year so it's going to mean some really good players may take a while to get in?

I don't disagree with you. I stated Maroney is probably my favorite Gopher ever and was a true gamebreaker.

In my opinion, Maroney was better. Was he way better? I don't think so.

Stats don't tell the full story, but does add some context:
Maroney: 660 carries, 3,933 yards, 6 yards per carry, 32 TDs, 21 catches, 197 yards, 1 TD
Barber: 575 carries, 3,276 yards, 5.7 yards per carry, 35 TDs, 21 catches, 190 yards

They were good enough that they should have gone in together. Unfortunately as we all know, tomorrow isn't promised, and now when MBIII gets inducted eventually, he won't be around to enjoy it.

Maroney also did that in one fewer season.

Agree they were both great.
