Horrible red card call!. Really!
I don’t have an issue with it if you’re calling cards appropriately throughout the game. The timing and mechanism of this ending up as red is completely insane with what they haven’t carded all game but that’s been consistent all tournament long

The officiating continues to be horrific even as this game keeps going on. This ref has no idea what he wants to call. Zero consistency

From all the games I've watched so far, don't think it deserved red. But, as you say, consistency of the officiating is worse than US basketball or hockey.

Ps- nice win!

Officiating has been all over the board yeah. It’s the problem of these randomly grouped crews from all over the world who call games wildly differently and then giving them a different set of recommendations on the fly for how to call games with idea of minimizing whistles and calls. It’s not good for the sport when you have guys who can chop legs out but because you still have the ball, they don’t call anything when the stoppage and frequency become more noticeable when the ref sees who’s doing it multiple times and addressing in real time.

Why they didn’t just do the throw of in speed and goal kick thing as the only changes (while autocarding diving), I don’t know. fans don’t care about the card thing and like it when it lets the game flow more freely because the back picks up a tactical yellow in a game or it forces you to show squad depth (which is supposed to be part of the point).

The espn guy reviewing the var (on their site; not the Fox broadcast guy) has so many of these that have been entirely wrong throughout the tourney, but it’s going to end not being a story because you’re going to still get the main story fifa wants. There’s a reason I much prefer watching league as at least it gets closer to even through a season

England will get beat by Mexico in their next game.
I agree. Altitude and the Azteca are going to be a huge advantage. It’s kind of insane they get that given soccer is such an aerobic sport and you’re just going to wreck England making their athletes try get there.

I didn’t look to see if they flew in last night or are going to go like the day before. Their body will not adapt so you may be better rolling in the day before and trying to take advantage of going before the body tries

Is there any type of an Appeals process for a Red Card in WC play similar to what they have in League play?
It'll be reviewed just like all red cards. For example, the guy who broke the Canadian player's leg I think ended up getting his red card upgraded to a five-game suspension. I suppose a review could go the other direction, from the standard one game down to zero.

Congrats to the U.S. for winning the World Cup! 2-0 over Senegal! No one woulda thought those two were standing at the end! USA!

I hated expanding to 48 teams and the format
I liked seeing all the parity

But I think I'm back to it being too many teams and too many games. The tournament is taking forever. Favorites are not losing round of 32 games.

Agree with this. Same with now all these teams claiming knockout wins for the first time in decades like it’s a big deal when the matchups are drastically different.

People will cite Germany losing like they were a “favorite” when anyone could see they’re just not that good this cycle. Ditto on Netherlands.

It’s “fun” to have the novelty of experience, but you’re eventually going to run into the same thing that the NCAA basketball tournaments do where just making the tournament isn’t viewed as as big an accomplishment anymore

Germany was the only upset. Morocco is ranked higher than the Netherlands.

“Upset” only in sense of name and FIFA ranking. They also lost to a terrible Ecuador team

More meaning people just look at names and assume it’s a huge upset.
