All Things Players Coming and Going (26-27 Off-Season)

I was excited about those two when they announced, and since they had very underwhelming years I feel like many people (including myself to an extent) gave up on them. Many U17 defenseman have growing pains playing up in that next level and I think reminders are needed of that. Next year will be a better indicator of how they are shaping out.

Apparently Geiger looked great playing at the U17 WHC against his age group.
yeah exactly. so much of it is the product of your team around you and the role you get to play.

Buium had 13 points his first year at the NTDP. Lane Hutson averaged half a point a game his first year on a loaded NTDP team (that's the Snuggy, Gauthier, Stramel, Nazar, Cooley, McGroarty, Lucius, Howard, team). On the flip side, Chesley put up 34 points his first year and just never seemed to find his offensive game at the college level.

Defenders typically take longer as you allude to playing against USHL kids who are older/heavier. Not saying they're gamebreakers like those guys, but U17 NTDP years are notoriously hard to draw a ton from, but pretty clear they both got some heavy seasoning. Would I feel better had they lit it up? Yeah. Is it abandon ship or think they're not going to be anything time? Nah

But what is the probability they explode like Buium and Hutson? Extremely low

I hope you don't actually think the Gophers recruit anywhere near the level of UM/MSU/UND after the NIL/CHL era fully started
It’s been two cycles. One of those we had a coach who didn’t like CHL guys who was headed for a firing and the next one we got a brand new head coach who also killed it in the portal. Through that bad cycle we have a top 10-15 pick. Take a chill pill. It’s one bad year. I’ll become concerned about the program as a whole if we keep trending downward the next couple years. Let Larson have an ounce of time to get his recruiting in

To be fair I was concerned about recruiting as well with Bob moving forward, but now I’m going to see how someone who will adapt more does. I just think it’s funny saying we’re not tier 1 every time one of those teams gets a decent recruit. We’re a top program and the right coach has the ability to recruit at that level here.

gets a decent recruit.
A decent recruit. Top two round pick after top two round pick after top two round pick after top two round pick

after top two round pick

With the CHL opened up, while a 4th round pick used to be pretty good, the standards of great recruiting have shifted way up.

So you’d rather have Matthew Gard than Tarin Smith because he’s a second rounder? I understand being upset about the very top dogs but Matthew Gard, Max Heise, Ben Macbeath, Bauer Dumanski among the guys you’ve reacted to is just silly. We have those level of players on our roster. Draft position doesn’t always determine the level of college recruit a player is once you get outside the very top draft picks. Mooney was a much bigger college recruit than NHL prospect. I just think we currently need to catch back up in terms of getting a couple big splashes of the cream of the crop.

Are you really comparing individual players and not seeing the forest for the trees that they recruit WAY BETTER than the Gophers.

I don’t even know if you’re reading what I’m saying, I said we have to catch back up when it comes to the cream of the crop players currently. That’s what we are missing right now. My point was complaining about those level of players I mentioned that we already have is silly.

And we have full capability of landing those big players if Larson is fit for the job.
I see zero reason he shouldn't have started landing guys for upcoming years already but I'm sure there will be some good excuse.

Have you looked at the roster for who is going to be gone versus back for the following year coupled with who is currently committed?

D: Murr, maybe Smith
F: Ludtke, likely Ziemer

D: McArthur and Geiger are projected draft picks and finishing their 2nd year in the NTDP, decision on Phillips
F: Likely Conboy (a borderline 1st) coming in in 2027; decision to be made on Katz.

Honestly there's not a ton of projected room. I'd be kind of annoyed if we're committing guys who averaged a half ppg (Gard) for what is relatively limited space right now. It's the same reason he's not committing guys right now is he clearly thinks he likes the team he has and is holding places for blue chipper talent if its there and you sure as hell hope that means he's going to do so next year as well

One can make an argument he should push more guys out, but now that all the eligibility is changing I'm fine with him not grabbing middle tier guys. This guy committing is such a weird one to react to when looking at actual production

MSU has 5 senior forwards and multiple high draft picks. there's going to be room up front there

Well, you can choose to believe that after three months on the job, that consisted of restructuring half the team right away, since he hasn’t put together his recruiting pipeline for the future that he’s toast. I just won’t be thinking that way

Ludtke, Ziemer, Harris, Nevers out (last two shouldn't be Gophers) + Mooney 50/50 or at least one F transfer
-5 forwards
Conboy + four other forwards needed as Jarvis and Katz are meh

Murr/Begley/Smith out + a transfer like Rombach cuz he's not great
- 4 D
ZERO D lined up for sure ready to come in (Geiger and Maccarthur totally raw and tbd, Phillips sucks at hockey so cut ties)

There are MASSIVE gaps to fill for next year

Rombach is an early 2nd rounder though why would you get rid of him?

Do you watch the games? He's not great. If Larson doesn't like his game he could definitely suggest a change of scenery for him.

Shame our one second rounder is a massive flop for his draft position. I think the NHL is learning (slowly) about the big D men.

Now when half your team is first and second rounders... you can get away with it

Figured you could sense some sarcasm, that’s the exact same type of recruit you are complaining about other teams getting lol

I need to see the day bonin says something positive about the team, I joined in here at too low of a point in Gopher hockey lol
I mean ya you joined at easily arguably the worst point the program has been in 100+ years based on the roster, pipeline, and NIL/CHL future outlook

That hasn't prevented virtually every other regular poster on this board from identifying and commenting on positive aspects of the program.

One part of recruiting that Larson may be excelling at is the staff he has put together. Let's give these guys time to get the program moving in the direction that they see fit and let guys like Cullen start developing the players that Larson and crew are bringing in. Maybe we can coach up our "second tier" players and win some games against the elites

Only part i'm interested in tonight is where cullen goes and where we see the big defensemen end up. Still outside chances some of them may be pressed towards signing

Rudolph 4th to the Sabers
Carels 6th to the Flames (this is actually one I could see Calgary pushing to sign him pending how camp goes as their D core sucks)
Chase Reid 7th to Seattle

Verhoeff has been the biggest "dropper" and I think is the interesting question of playing your D-1 year in the NCAA. he goes 9th to SJ who it would also not surprise me to see them push to sign him

1. McKenna PSU
3. Malhotra BU
4. Rudolph DU
6. Carels UND
7. Reid MSU
9. Verhoeff UND
10. Cullen UMN
11. Lawrence BU
14. Hemming BC
15. Klepov MSU
17. Belchetz MSU
20. Morozov Miami
21. Lin DU
22. Ruck UND
23. Hurlbert UM

MSU and UND with three in the first round so far

Hextall makes it four for MSU in one draft... Plus four others already on the roster and West probably deferred
