All Things 2026 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

I wonder what the payoff of the 1st inning Ohtani/Buxton home run parlay was?

Sort of odd that another All Star Freddie Freeman also hit a solo HR along with Ohtani/Buxton, and that wound up being 100% of the runs scored in a 2-1 game.

Not that huge of a deal, but they could have had Abel on the 60-day IL and gotten the benefit of an extra slot on the 40 man this entire time.
Huh?

The original MRI, prior to this one showed no ligament damage either. So he was placed in the 15; if he hadn’t experienced additional soreness after his last bullpen session, after completing two rehab starts in St. Paul, he would have pitched Sunday.

I don’t see any errors in that approach🤷‍♂️

I am not being critical of the decision, just pointing it out in hindsight as I initially stated "not that huge of a deal".

Even if Abel had pitched in Arizona on Sunday (June 21) that was still beyond 60 days as he was placed on the list effective April 20. By mid-May at least the signals looked like it was going to be a full 2 months on the list.

I have zero idea if there was anyone worth keeping that they moved off the 40man nor if a FA player that would have been worth adding.

Thanks for clarifying - I wasn’t aware it had been thst long.

Uber drivers must love you🥸

A little bit here about the ABS challenge so far. I imagine teams will really start training young catchers to recognize pitches to challenge. That skill could be as impactful as anything else defensively. Caratini, for example, has added 11 strikeouts of opposing batters due to his challenges and has reversed 3 walks.

3) The ABS Challenge System has an even bigger impact than expected.
While the number of challenges per game (4.2) is right in line with what we saw at the Triple-A level last year, the impact of those challenges has been more pronounced.
Challenges have been more successful at the MLB level this year (53% overturn rate) than they were at the Triple-A level in 2025 (50%). The goal is to get more calls right, and the system is doing that.
ABS leads to a tighter strike zone -- especially at the top end -- than had been enforced previously. And that’s helping to offset the continued decline of batting average in our high-velo, high-spin, pitch-shaping environment that is such hell on hitters.
The walk rate (9.1%) is the highest it's been in a full season since 2000 (9.6%). So while the leaguewide batting average has dipped one point (.245 to .244) from last year, the on-base percentage has actually increased five points (.315 to .320). The strikeout rate has fallen a small amount, from 22.2% to 22%, but it’s the rise in walks that is most notable.

Just 2 dogs, plus a pretzel with cheese and a Busch Light (12 oz can). It was less than $14.

Last night I attended on virtually a last minute decision as the weather was awesome and today is suspect.

Very good crowd. While I generally approve of 6:40 PM starts (Mon-Thur) because it works great for my schedule, on nights were there is a big crowd it can create a hassle. Lines were enormously long at all the gates when I arrived at 6:10 PM.

I barely got to my seat in time for 1st pitch, was just before Ohtani rocked one onto the Plaza.

Instead of opting for budget concessions, I splurged on a Kramarczuk's brat with onions. With chips and a Pepsi, that runs for $29 pre-tip.

Those brats may be my favorite in stadium food I have had anywhere. Right up there with the grilled Italian Sausages at Fenway Park, with onions/peppers on a hoagie bun.

When I went to Boston back in 2022 I hit Fenway on my first night there. I went back the next day as much for the sausage as the game and atmosphere.

Brisk game. Still light out when it ended. Twins bats appeared travel weary, unfortunately could not take advantage of strong pitching performance by Zebby Matthews.

I'm guessing 1/3rd of the crowd was Dodger fans. 35,244 announced.

Injury update from the above posted article.

Fortunately. No ligament damage for Abel, just inflammation.

• Mick Abel’s MRI showed swelling in his right elbow, but no ligament damage. Abel was on the verge of rejoining the Twins when he had a setback related to a bullpen session Friday in Phoenix.

The swelling is a reoccurrence of the original injury suffered by Abel in mid-April. Though the pitcher and team have to be pleased there’s no damage to the ligament, what this means for Abel’s timeline is unclear.

• Bailey Ober (right elbow inflammation) is set to throw a lengthier bullpen on Tuesday, an effort that could last upwards of 40 pitches. Ober threw a 25-pitch bullpen on Saturday in Phoenix.
This is like 3 "setbacks" for Abel. It seems like Tommy John is inevitable and they are just costing him 2027 by waiting.

How did the concessions work with the "strike" occurring?

Have you ever had major surgery? Not tonsils or outpatient? In my experience , they won’t do any surgery, while there are still other medical viable options left.

Per Google. -

Q - Will a doctor perform Timmy John surgery without ligament damage to the UCL.

A -
No, an orthopedic surgeon will not perform Tommy John surgery if there is no damage to the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). [1, 2]
Ethical medical guidelines and surgical standards dictate that Tommy John surgery—medically known as UCL reconstruction—is strictly an elective procedure used to treat a structurally compromised or torn ligament. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Surgeons will refuse to perform the operation on a healthy UCL for several critical reasons: [1]

Lack of Medical Necessity
  • Targeted Purpose: Tommy John surgery requires drilling holes into the arm bones (humerus and ulna) to weave in a harvested tendon graft. If the original ligament is fully intact and stable, there is no structural deficit to correct. [1, 2]
  • The "Velocity Myth": There is a common misconception among youth players and parents that Tommy John surgery acts as an upgrade that inherently increases throwing velocity. In reality, any post-surgery velocity gains are purely the result of rigorous physical therapy, core strengthening, and corrected throwing mechanics during the 12-to-18 month rehab process.[1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Serious Surgical Risks
Performing a major, invasive surgery without a diagnosis exposes a patient to unnecessary, career-threatening risks, including:
  • Permanent nerve damage or numbness
  • Severe joint infection
  • Permanent loss of elbow range of motion and stiffness
  • Rupture or stretching of the new graft

At the regular stands, looked like steady lines but not overwhelming considering the crowd.

My only food visit was for the Kramarczuk's, and it was at a small little stand/booth in the top deck. No line at all in the 3rd inning.

I did a grab and go water in the 7th. Those still amuse me asking if I want to add gratuity when checking out.

Fine. It still feels inevitable that there will eventually be damage and it will end in Tommy John surgery.
