Gophers vs. Cal in Sioux Falls

As a former season-ticket holder who over the years openly (here) criticized a lot of Gopher non-conference schedules for their lack of a truly decent home game, I can say I’m not one of those people. And that applies to this season, too. TSTSNMH should not be the Gophers’ best NC home game during any season. As of now they are. I’d assume Niko’s working on that. Schedule needs a notable Barn opponent of some national stature.

The people who determine tournament entry rankings need to do something to take away the rating advantages of neutral site games. It’s not good for any fan base.
They should only allow schools one neutral site game in NET rankings per year (or every other year), outside of approved tournaments.

100%

There are a (small) number of people who post here that would rather see us play St. Thomas in The Barn in front of 5,000 people instead of Duke with an SRO crowd.
There will be way more than 5K at the barn when UST is there. I would take Duke 100/100 times.

Not my point because neither will happen.

There will not be 5K or fewer at The Barn when UST comes here (barring a crazy weather event).

Duke will not play here in the near future.

They'd rather have St. Thomas at The Barn than a marquee opponent, even if the latter is what puts people in seats and the program on the national radar. People would tune in, from all around the country, to see us play a premier program, not many eyeballs will be watching whatever platform this game ends up on to watch the Gophers play UST that aren't affiliated with either program.

Or make a true road game loss equal to a neutral site win.

If the Tommies game can sell out the barn, we should schedule them each year until it doesn’t. We need those dollars to keep improving the program.

St. Thomas doesn't fill their 4,000 (?) seat arena and the Gophers draw less than 10K for most non-conference games. I think the idea that this will sell out is a huge stretch. Maybe for the first time. It wouldn't as an annual game.

Hopefully there is some residual benefit from the St Thomas contest by also moving Multi-Pack inventory for additional games at The Barn by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota.

I agree, and should have bolded the If in my post. But if sellouts occur, take advantage!

I don't know what the attendance will be, but I'm glad we scheduled it.

There is more intrigue in playing them than in playing IUPUI; you cannot deny that.

My hope is we absolutely demolish them, remind them who their father is, and send them back to St. Paul with their tails between their legs.

Post-game, it creates an interesting dynamic: I'll actually care how they perform, since they'll likely be the best non-power 4 team we face at the Barn. I may even have to cheer for them to have a good season (bittersweet feeling on that).

Mostly, I'm just glad Niko did it. He had every reason not to, but wasn't afraid of having slightly more to lose than to gain.

This is a slightly more appetizing cupcake game, and as others have pointed out, it should not replace a Power 4 team visiting the Barn.

We need to start winning consistently and then we’ll be able to schedule better schools. Simple as that. Nobody wants to schedule a team like us due to the current set up. We can only hurt these teams so it’s not worth it, similar to a mid major in some ways. Hopefully Niko can get us there.

Well, seeing as IUPUI no longer exists as a combined university, its would be a pretty crappy event, and really bad scheduling

I went to the game when they still existed, and it was still a pretty crappy event, and really bad scheduling.
