Per Chip:
A party of 20 gathered around a U-shaped table at Mancini’s Char House for steaks, stories and laughs after a round of golf. If patrons seated nearby had just closed their eyes and listened closely, they might have identified someone familiar within that chorus of smooth-sounding voices.
A sports fan from Wisconsin likely would have recognized one of them. Same thing for a visitor from Ohio. Most definitely Indiana. And Iowa. And Michigan. And right here in Minnesota, too.
Those gentlemen assembled at the table provide the soundtrack to our college football and basketball fandom, known professionally and affectionately as the “voices” of Big Ten teams.
“I don’t think any other conference has this,” said Will Tieman, radio voice of Michigan State men’s basketball.
“This” is an annual gathering of radio play-by-play announcers for two days of golf, dinners and fellowship. Now in its ninth season, the event started small but has grown to include a dozen or so broadcasters who share the same job for different fan bases.
Gophers voice Mike Grimm took his turn hosting the event this past week. It was a considerable undertaking to arrange tee times, dinner reservations, an outing to a Twins game and Minnesota-themed gift bags that Grimm assembled that included goodies made locally.
Go Gophers!!
