Big Ten Dominates 1st Round of NFL Draft

The B1G had 10, the SEC 7 and the ACC & Big 12 had 6 each. The big news to me is not just that the SEC has lost ground to the B1G, it's that they appear to have lost ground to the ACC and Big 12. Yes, I understand one year is a very small sample size, This is a shift, however, that will likely stick now that the alumni base and big donors mean much more while geographic location means much less. Alabama and Auburn have no inherit advantage based on those two criteria, not only vs. Minnesota, but also vs. Iowa State or Arizona State. They just had a dominant geographic advantage. The SEC has a TV deal based on their former dominance, not future projections. That deal will continue to help the conference especially versus the ACC and Big 12 until it expires in 2033/2034, but what then? No, I am NOT predicting the demise of the SEC, geography still matters, and seven years is a million in college sports right now, but it will be interesting to watch.

Will any Gophers get taken this year? None so far about one third way through the 6th round.

Waiting on someone to post how if you think the gophers dominated the first round they’re an idiot

It was amazing to see the number of ohio state players taken in the 1st round, yet they didn't win the B1G or the National Championship. Coaching failure?

If you ask my father in law (massive Buckeye fan) it was the coaches fault but in the end they lost by 3 points to the eventual National Champion and by 10 to the runner up.

So yeah, by their very lofty standards the season was a failure but they they got a lot out of all that talent that got drafted.

OSU QB wasn't great... Just sayin'

The entire defense that started the national championship game victory vs ND was drafted no later than the 5th round the past 2 drafts, and thrown in Lorenzo Styles as a fifth rounder, as a non-starter but heavily used player.

Ridiculous amount of talent on both sides of the ball.

I know this is a talker, but it shouldn't be a serious question. The same guy responsible for losing to eventual National Champion Indiana by 3 points in the Big Ten Championship is the same guy evaluating and closing the deals on all these highly rated players. Managing the Ohio State football team is a gigantic task. He does it well.

Everything goes well except your quarterback lays an egg...yes, ultimately that is on coach. But, they did lose to a team that was runnerup in a very competitive title game. In this era, I think it is tough to win it all every year. Oregon and Alabama are not passing Ohio State by...they have similar organizations.

Day does an excellent job running the program. I think it's impossible to hire a coach where we all don't second guess game day decisions. His leadership of the program is proven to be excellent.

I kinda hate the conference this or conference that meme type stories at this point.

It's like the SEC chant ...

I always find the internet meme / fan / click bait attitude interesting vs say the "market" for coaches.

If say Ryan Day was an actually bad coach you'd think he'd fall pretty far if he was fired. But if it happened, schools would be falling over themselves to offer him a job.

Whenever we were looking for a coach and there was some disgruntled blue blood fanbase I thought "man I wish they would fire that guy ..." but for many of them they'd have a ton of offers.

Gotta spin it however they can. They can't seem to win championships these days and when it just means more that is unacceptable. :)

Well, what else can you be proud of if you live in Alabama, Louisiana, or Mississippi?

You really see the effects of the portal with these numbers. Just comparing to the 2019 numbers, the AAC had 11, MW 10, MAC 9, FCS 7, C-USA 6, DII 5 then.

Going back to 2015, the FCS had 17 players drafted that year.

I am really curious what the breakdown would be by Conference based on where the players were as Freshmen.

Same. I've always speculated that the lower conferences get better young talent than they used to because players go where they know they can play right away and then transfer out.

Oh, wasn't trying to put you down, and I got the joke, it just seemed like a good place for me to put that. I had just run across that factoid and wasn't sure where to put it.

And Drake might help them dominate next year too 😲

He also had Smith listed in the 26-30 range (only did writeups on top 25 and then listed next 5 in alpha order).

I will say this, if Drake is getting first round NFL buzz at the end of they year it probably means we had a hell of a season.
